Mot test today
Discussion
Just interested Does this mot report sound a bit odd ? It mentions the things in the advisory section but states in capitals it’s dangerous like it’s not roadworthy but then why pass it or put it under advisories when it’s supposedly more serious ?
Monitor and repair if necessary (advisories):
Offside Front Play in steering rack inner joint(s) DANGEROUS
Nearside Front Play in steering rack inner joint(s)
Offside Rear Coil spring corroded (5.3.1 (b) (i))
Oil leak, but not excessive (8.4.1 (a) (i))

One. There is a dedicated thread populated by testers that will answer all your questions!
Two. As you were unaware I will take this one. Steering track rod inner joints currently do not have an RFR (reason for rejection) but there is a non component advisory on the scheme for them we can 'tick' Then there is an option to list this fail as a 'Dangerous' one if we deem it so.
In this case the tester acted correctly and they obviously had reason to believe there is a risk of failure of the part. Change them both as once they start to fail they deteriorate quickly.

Ahh ok I wasn’t aware of the exact rules with the steering rack technicalities .its still a bit odd though but I guess they just go by the book .one of my theories is garages which get use to mostly mot testing more modern cars will be more picky comparing a 25yr old car to a 5 yr old one in general wear all over .Halfords was definitely like this on one occasion and would never bother going back

Car is a car, 25 years old with 20k miles or 3 years old with 65k we test them the same, just as a tyres is a tyre and a joint is a joint. We do go by the book, although there is scope for professional judgement if there is wear that is borderline but we are taught to test to 'minimum standards' so it must be in poor shape to generate that advisory.
