Hello all,

I've just bought a car and am about to put a number onto it that I currently have on retention. I see a note on the V5 of the new car that it has a 'non-transferable registration mark'. I've already established that this doesn't stop me putting my currently retained number onto it, but I can't find out if that restriction would stop me from putting the new number onto retention (as I want to keep it so that it can go back on when I sell). I'm thinking that as it's not transferrable, then it should stay available anyway and I wouldn't need to put it on retention to guarantee I can have it back....but I'm not sure. Does anyone know definitively on that? Thanks.

you don't ned to put the original on retention.

when you remove the plate it car will revert back to that plate, that's why it is not transferrable, if I recall correctly.

I've always got the original registration back when removing my plates.

Except when it's registered on a cherished plate in which case it's given an age appropriate plate when the cherished plate is put on retention.
