My new car has a narrow seat base and fairly aggressive stiff side bolsters. After 30-40 minutes I start getting pain in my right leg and bum. I think it must be pressure on my sciatic nerve. I’m 6ft2 and almost 16st, which is the heaviest I’ve ever been. I’ve never had this issue with any other cars I’ve driven.

I’d like to get back down to around 14.5st but wondering if losing some ‘padding’ from my rear will make the seat more or less comfortable? My bone structure isn’t going to change so maybe losing weight won’t make any difference.

Anyone lost weight to fit in a car seat better and did it work?

Fitting into the seats or not, you would probably feel better and be healthier if you lost a bit of weight. Do it for those reasons first and foremost.

I am sure it will work and defo worth a try.

Remember that most of being over weight or gaining weight is calorie excess and not necessarily exercise dependent. It’s those habits of that bit of chocolate each day etc. when I gave up alcohol the weight fell off with no effort.

Craig Beck did a book called "fat girl friday" which explains why diets are not a solution…I think it is for men and women.

At 6ft 2 and 16stone, the fella isn't overweight by any means...

Don't go off the BMI; it's utter bullst!

Unless the OPs a stealth blob; his weight isn't bad at all

I think around 14 stone is about the upper normal for that height. Most people know if they are carrying fat or too much weight, we kind of know the feel of our healthy weight

This. But don't just diet, change your lifestyle.

I'm not an expert in weight or seats, but being uncomfortable in a car seat or chair is miserable.

Different people are different shapes and not all seats will work for all people. I'm 6ft2 and currently around 80kg, 12.5stone, but I've always been tall and thin, ten years ago in my mid 20s I was 75kg max. My brother is not as tall but much broader is the shoulders and no doubt arse, and I expect also heavier than me.

If you feel you would be better a bit lighter, I expect your right, and I very much doubt it would be make the seat any worse

However it might also be that the seat will never be comfortable for you. If it's a car your keen on, what are the options for different seats for that car? Maybe that's an option.

If he's a pro rugby player his weight is fine. If not he's fat*, as he acknowledges...

A bit of glute muscle bulk might help, but weight loss (or a new car) is essential. ETA that said could be GTPS - ie weak/tight glutes or a bit of sciatica.

* Been there, got the t-shirt**...

Lose some weight fatboy

There is absolutely nothing good or beneficial about being fat or overweight.

Also as it's a 'new car' surely you had test driven it and found it uncomfortable before buying?

Nah, ignore all that. Eat more pies and squash those annoying bolsters into submission.

For the majority of the population BMI is more than accurate enough.

Applying your own edge case to everyone is daft, unless you fancy paying 70% tax in the future to fund all the additional healthcare.

Serious question for OP. Do you keep your wallet in your right rear pocket? I have found that the combination of wallet plus certain car seats equals excruciating pain in the right leg and arse after an hour or so. Probably pressure on the sciatic nerve. Removing wallet and handing to wife brings instant relief.

Lose some weight.

Wear leggings?*

  • Obviously you will need a manbag then too, but it will also get your wallet and phone out of your pockets.

No, but it is that type of pain.

Further googling reveals it might be piriformis syndrome, which is muscle inflammation in your butt that then irritates the sciatic nerve - can also be caused by sitting on your wallet.

OP, it might not be your weight but the way you have the seat adjusted. Too much support under your thighs? Sitting too upright or too far away from the wheel?

Experiment.

Have the seat all the way back and fully lowered, I have tried raising it a bit, but I don’t think it’s that - I can feel the side bolsters digging in.
