Swapping private reg

Excuse the lazy post when it's probably easy to find an answer. I did search engine this but thought i'd ask the wiser people here.

I've bought a van to replace my existing. I will probably end up scrapping or selling for spares / repairs my existing van. What process do I go through to get the private reg off my existing van and put it on the replacement? Do I put it back on retention first or do I just use some dvlc form to swap straight over?

Fee's wise i'm looking at 80 quid (scandalous!) to take it off and nothing to put it on new vehicle?

If scrapping or selling old vehicle and spares I guess I don't need the new plates making up for the original registration I can tell the buyer it's their problem (along with many others!)

If you have bought your new van from a garage, if you give them the retention number they will often be able to apply the plate before you collect.

If you already have the van, once you have the logbook, just go to here to assign it.

99% of the times the previous (original?) registration number is reallocated to the vehicle the private registration is being removed from.

Don't suppose you kept the previous plates in your shed, garage...?

They used to charge an extra £25 on top although done away with that now its predominately on-line!
