Hot Polestar 2 teased ahead of debut

We're promised 'something thrilling' for March 21st - expect much gold

If not exactly perfect, the Polestar 2 BST is a likeable performance car. It feels engineered by and aimed at folk like us, people for whom driving is to be enjoyed and partaken in - not merely endured. Ultimately, however, the efforts of Polestars chassis gurus are undermined by the inherent compromises of the 2, meaning that its very decent sports saloon was never likely to be elevated to the status of a truly great one.

That might be about to change, however. Polestar is promising us ‘something thrilling’ come next week. Its recent tweet has been accompanied by a teaser image of the new car, which is clearly the updated 2 (see the light signature) and appears to be fitted with some of the BST goodies, including the forged wheels and gold brake calipers. The ride height seems a lot less lofty than standard, too, with a much-reduced gap between wheelarch and tyre. Given the response to the BST 270 (all of them sold out, and it seems like quite quickly), it seems almost certain Polestar having another go at a proper go-faster flagship 2. A series production model would mean BST customers could keep their limited edition kudos, too.

Don’t forget, moreover, that the update for the new 2 is far more than just cosmetic. The front-drive base model is now rear-wheel drive, and the AWD variants - which will form the basis for whatever a new BST becomes - will now go further, charge faster and drive better if Polestar’s claims are to be believed. A ‘completely rebalanced drivetrain setup and torque ratio’ is promised, with a more powerful rear axle motor coming to give the car a balance less dictated by the front end and (hopefully) a torque split more interesting than 50:50.

We'll see. For now, Polestar is adding nothing more than a ‘buckle up’ caption and date confirmation. But given the popularity of the limited edition and the worthwhile changes coming for the 2, it would seem daft not to take advantage. Expect more on Tuesday.

I do like the look of the Polestar 2. However the cabin space is woefull compared to rivals & thats someting that cant be improved. Real shame as i really really really wanted one but couldnt get comfortable on test drive.

It would be nice to see them come out with a paint palette that isn't just horrendously dull. Checking the configurator for the P2, you can choose from silver, white, pale grey, dark grey, black, and a 'blue' that is basically just 'very very dark grey'. Same appears to be true of things like the Hyundai 'whatever it is' that's electric. The ID3 at least has a very dark red as an option.

I know these electric cars are essentially white goods on wheels, and that white/black/grey sells but god almighty it's dull - at least give me the option of a bright blue or a cherry red or even a yellow or something.

I'm going to restrict my niggle to one thing, a dislike of the rear lights smile just don't like the long horizontal lights these days that stretch the whole width of the car, yuk.

That colour choice was really limited, when I ordered mine black was the "free" colour and it was something like £1000 for any other colour, so went with black and had it wrapped.

It's been a really good car, I have ended now for 20 months and have done 24,000 faultless miles.

Nice - was thinking get a free colour and wrap it. Would it be right to assume that a white car would make the wrap look better? I presume the wraps aren't totally opaque...

Won't make a blind bit of difference what colour the car is underneath. What makes you think wraps aren't opaque, out of interest?

I do like the look of these. One of the more interesting looking electric cars on the road. More Saab than Volvo to my eyes. They remind me of a 99/900.

I know they don't look really similar, but kind of Saab evolved, like when you compare a 70's 911 to a modern one.

I just wish they would make an estate. These renderings people have made look amazing!

I really like the Polestar 2, but it has 2 issues for me. It looks like it is on tiptoes, and the dull colours. It looks like there will be new version that solves the tiptoes, and hopefully not as only a special edition this time. As for colours, I’d like to see Swedish Gold to match the seatbelts, etc.
