In locked car let insurance lapse

Got a Z4 3.5i as summer car which SORN over winter months. Its in a locked garage. In previous years have always kept insured fully comprehensive. Have tried to save by getting a laid up policy but have always found this lacking in terms of cover or minimal saving against leaving compressive insurance in place. Renewal beginning of April but like all other insurances gone up 25% and maxing out comparison sites can't find a cheaper quote.

Considered leaving and renewing early May -depending on weather. Any consensus on doing this and if so what additional security measures do you take?

Crikey, that took some reading.

I've had SORNed cars uninsured for a few months on a couple of occasions, once on my drive, once in a secure-ish car park. I didn't do anything specific about security. In both cases I'd have been annoyed rather than financially distressed by a total loss, not sure I'd do it with anything especially valuable or prone to theft, but the reality is that most cars go through their entire lives without being nicked.

Take a couple of wheels off and store them somewhere else. Remove battery.

Deters casual theft and removes the primary cause of car fires.

Ha, no chance. I asked it to write a question like this and here is its output:

ChatGPT said:
"As an avid BMW Z4 3.5i enthusiast, I'm contemplating whether to opt for fully comprehensive insurance or a 'laid-up' policy during the winter months when my car is off the road and SORN registered. The car is stored in a locked garage during this period. Has anyone in this community had experience with either option for a high-performance vehicle like the Z4 3.5i, and which do you think is the better choice considering the storage location? I'm also curious about any potential cost savings between the two options. Keep in mind that my policy renews in April. Thank you in advance for your insights."

That's funny, but oh so accurate.

Maybe more PH'ers should use ChatGPT - just think of the improved spelling and grammar!

Is it in a locked garage at your house, or in a lock-up somewhere else? I've heard quite a few sad stories about cars in separate lock-ups being vandalised / burned out, conversely if the car's in a garage at home then it feels subjectively a lot safer.

As said the main risks are fire or theft, fire doesn't seem that likely to me as it's not a BMW diesel ;p and a fairly modern car. As said battery out would seem to minimise this risk.

Is it convenient to park another car in front of the garage? that would further reduce the chance of it being stolen I guess.

Personally I reckon ok if it's at your house, not if it's in another location.

Is it old enough for classic insurance? If so that should bring your premium down.

This pretty much sums up my opening questions.

My personal decision tree would be.

If it’s in a locked and alarmed garage at home, I would consider a laid up policy.
But, if it’s in public block of garages, I would want full cover theft insurance.

Surely the higher ups wouldn't want that though - would reduce the post count in NPE by half if the grammar police had nothing to post about
