So, I have a car up for sale at the moment with a private plate on it. I have had an enquiry regarding just selling the plate. I wasn't sure how this would work. I've transferred plates before but just from one of my cars to another but I didn't know how the plate would legally be transferred to the new owner; anybody done this?

Any advice would be great.
Thanks

You need to retain the plate first so it is removed from the vehicle, once you receive the retention document back you can change the nominee by post. I don’t believe it’s possible yet to transfer a retained plate to a new owner online.

In a nutshell - put the plate on retention and get the car on the original plate (or an age related assigned one)

Once you have the plate on retention and hard copy of the certification you can sell it

Do NOT share the V750 or V778 or if you do block out the ref numbers or anyone with the ref numbers can assign the plate to a vehicle without your consent

When you transfer the plate off the car, you can put another person's name down on the retention form as a 'nominee.' It can only be retained in the name on the V5c for the vehicle.

What tends to happen in practice is you just retain it in your name, sell the registration for whatever you agree, and then give the buyer the V778 retention document. Signing it is advised if they intend to do it by post but since transfer to another vehicle can be done online, all they need is the certificate number really but people tend to want a physical document. smile They are valid for 10 years and this can be extended for free but ONLY by the person who originally retained it. The only way it can be 'owned' by somebody else is by putting it on another vehicle with a different registered keeper.

Don't forget it costs you £80 to remove the plate and put it on retention...

Not teaching you to suck eggs but make sure the buyer of the plate is serious before you incur £80 to remove it...
