MST confirms just two 6R4s remaining

You'll need £295k plus VAT to take delivery of a new 6R4 next year - three buyers have already taken the plunge

The excitement around MST’s latest project, brand new and road-registered Metro 6R4s, was always guaranteed. How could it not be? But even allowing for that, things have moved fast, with the firm announcing that three 2024 build slots are already spoken for - at what MST now reckons will definitely be £295k plus VAT - and just a pair remaining. It hasn't said what the split is between the roadgoing versions and rally replicas, or what plans might be beyond next year.

The latest update from the team beyond availability is on hubs, specifically updating the original design with modern tech. For the 6R4, that means AP Racing brakes, with giant calipers by the looks of the illustrations, as well as Reiger suspension; if you want the best for your rally car, you get Reiger suspension. Its hardware was used when Colin McRae won the 1999 Safari Rally, when M-Sport Ford won the 2006 WRC Manufacturers’ title, and for the entire top 10 cars of the 2012 Dakar. Among other things. Not that this was ever going to be any ordinary build, but clearly the MST 6R4 is going to be crammed with expensive motorsport bits. Don’t forget the Sadev sequential, carbon panels and everything else besides.

That’s pretty much it for now, but what more do you need to know about a restomod Metro 6R4? We knew one of the most loved Group B cars was going to retain V6 power (450hp remains the output ballpark) and be blessed with the know-how of a very well-regarded classic rally specialist. Now we know it’s going to get top-drawer brakes and suspension, and there are just two more cars left for 2024. What are you waiting for?!

The MST 6R4 will be one of a plethora of awesome cars at PH25 - get your tickets here

Far too much money. Furthermore, if I did want a 6R4 I would want an original one.

I bought an original one on Ebay 20 years ago for £25k, then it was a fair price, today we all know they are north of £150k.

I suppose the positive are that people have more choices.

If I had money I’d love an escort cosworth worked over like this and then improved in key areas. Can see why people do it!

Will the MST version be better than an original in most objectives ways though? Genuine question.

Wish they’d do a Sunbeam Lotus.
Having said that it’d probably cost £300k too….

Lots of "too much money’ posts but they didn’t struggle selling them so it’s a case of ‘too much for me’

I still think it's wonderful, but yes, big big money.

I guess the question is, this or a supercar, i think I know which one would be more user friendly...

No idea why people are getting excited about this. It wasn't very good when it was new, not least because BL had no money to spend to develop it. If you want a Group B car, get a RS200, or a Quattro Sport or even better, an S4 Stradale. They were great cars.

As mentioned before - Rallycross had bigger audiences back in the day than F1, one of the best cars on the grid was a 6R4 and it wasn’t the only one. That nostalgia counts for a lot.

It also didn’t need to win to be great….it is an iconic and much loved shape (to some)

If you've seen any of the videos of their other work (the Escorts for example), you'll know the answer. Look up Jonny's reviews on the Late Brake Show......... so much want!

These new ones are probably going to be an awful lot cheaper than running an original car. How does £26 a mile sound if nothing goes wrong?

I'm shocked!
Honestly I'm not shocked when it has such a highly strung and non production engine.

I think this is the nub of the MST one - you can use it, abuse it and repair it without worrying about its value or mega running costs

If I had the dough I would. A fantastic car and one as deserving of a modern reiteration as any 911.

I heard that due to its heritage the original cost approx £20 per mile to run. The MST should be far more reasonable to keep on the road.

Since when did being "very good" matter to people buying cars like this? People buy them because they want them, not because they are objectively the best car available.

As a youth in the late 80s, my favourite Group B car was the 6R4 (2nd - 205 T16, 3rd - RS200) perhaps because my mum had a 998cc Metro biggrin

If I was a success in life or won the Lotto I'd definitely be tempted by one of these restomods (perhaps in my dream world it would have a more modern engine swapped into the rear - maybe with a more modest power output and state of tune to make the car more useable as a daily or road trip vehicle).

Perhaps the RS200 would be a better base for an engine swap as they 'only' had a 4-pot, so putting a 2.3 ecoboost in the back would still be in character.

The 6R4 we had really struggled to put down the power, but it was great fun. We also had a Sierra Cosworth and used to race them side by-side on a figure of 8 circuit. Great finesse was needed on the controller to keep them on track - something my three lads were better at than me. I think the cars are still up in the attic somewhere!

Though this 6R4 is not for me, I appreciate the engineering skills going into it, and am glad there are people with enough interest and £££ to keep this industry alive.
Now, if it was a SAAB 99 rally car, I might be hunting down the back of the sofa...
