Behold the Lego Technic Peugeot 9X8

Excited about Le Mans? Need something to fill the Bank Holiday weekends? Lego has just the thing

Even in a field of awesome new-era Le Mans hypercars, the Peugeot 9X8 stands out. Though the wingless rear end is the most obvious attention-grabber, it’s hard to avoid gawping at every bit of it, from those claw-like strakes for lights to the huge snorkel-cum-spine. It’s going to be a spectacular sight at La Sarthe and now, thanks to Lego, the Peugeot 9X8 can look great on your mantelpiece as well.

The Lego Technic 9X8 is a 1:10 model that faithfully recreates all the key elements of the real thing, including an engine for the rear wheels, electric motor for the front axle, doors, suspension, and glow-in-the-dark elements for the full endurance racer effect. Comprised of 1,775 pieces, the Lego Technic Peugeot is 50cm long, 22cm wide and 13cm high. Well worth making some room for, basically.

Not least because so much time has already been invested in the project before you so much as open the box. By their nature, Technic projects are more involved than regular Lego, and the 9X8 has actually been in development since January 2022. Almost like it’s a real car. Peugeot Sport’s Technical Director Olivier Jansonnie added: “It was very important for both brands to create a model that is as realistic as possible. Peugeot, Peugeot Sport and the Lego teams had numerous meetings about the development of the suspension and hybrid systems that cannot be replicated from photos. We thank the Lego Group for this project, we are very proud and impressed by the final result that is more than we could have imagined.”

Unsurprisingly, Lego has suggested that making the 9X8’s arresting shape using Technic bits wasn’t exactly easy, but the effort now looks more than worth it. On sale from May 1st (yes, the first of two consecutive Bank Holiday Mondays, almost like they planned it), the Lego Technic Peugeot 9X8 will cost £169.99.

Or, for those builders that want something a little less racy, how about the Lego Icons Defender 90? Launched just ahead of the Peugeot, it offers loads of personalisation possibilities, with both standard and fully off-road capable configurations. This means an enormous 2,336 pieces, sure, but then a sage green Defender kitted out with everything from a winch to a shovel does look brilliant. It’s a lot easier to make a Defender look like the real thing out of Lego than a Le Mans Hypercar, after all.

Kurt Kristiansen, Lego Design Master commented: “This prestigious car can take you anywhere, so during the design process we wanted to infuse the Lego set with that sense of adventure. The two-in-one format means you can load up with all the necessary kit, whether you want to race through Scotland like our adventurers Raha Moharrak and Aldo Kane, navigate water or even sandy dunes. We can’t wait to see fans' reactions.” Available now, the Lego Icons Defender 90 costs £209.99. Best get building asap; you’ll want it done before the Peugeot arrives…

Other than the Defender I find the Lego cars give me visions of a car that Father Ted has attempted dent removal. Given the price and ability to shift them probably just me.

Do you think Lego might build a BMW M2? It would look indistinguishable from the real thing.....

I'm inclined to agree. Some of them have looked spot on, like the Camper Van, Beetle, Defender etc. Put the Porsche and this one look too gappy. I appreciate they're clearly complex to design and limited with shapes and parts but they don't look good enough to warrant the cost in my opinion.

I like that. Doesn’t look too bad to my eyes. Better than some of LEGOs efforts recently.

That’s very cool. I already have a 911 RSR, a Space Shuttle, and a Saturn V rocket in my office, and a wife who knows what a default birthday or Christmas present might be.
