Anyone have any ideas on what happened to the crankshaft pulley on my Porsche 996 Turbo from the attached pic?

Went into garage with suspected starter motor failure only to find the drive belt wrapped around the crank.

Crank can be turned manually and all other pulleys and tensioner are fine.

The retaining lip looks hammered! Last guy had trouble getting the belt on so beat the lip down?

Could it be a dropped screw getting sucked into it?

That's a weird one and not possible by the drive belt itself. There's been some sort of hard material contact there IMHO - either a stone has jammed it's way in there or a bolt has rubbed on it or something... it may even be that whatever caused the damage has subsequently fallen out when the belt broke. Will all need carefully inspecting and a new pulley obviously.

Yep, I'd agree, a foreign body has got in there and done that damage and taken the drive belt out at the same time.

Would you all agree that the damage looks fresh, i.e. within the past few weeks?

Otherwise there would be more corrosion/dirt on the damaged parts?
