Not had an accident that involved insurance companies for many years. A couple of weeks ago, my wife caught the edge of another car that was parked while dropping my son off to school. It was a pretty much brand new hyundai. A few scratches in the plastics was about the sum of it. So I spoke to the driver's husband that evening, apologize and suggested that he might want to get a quote to repair it and we can go from there. A few days later he sends through a quote from a body shop for nearly £11k.

After I had finished laughing I told him if he wanted to play it like this, it would need to go through the insurance. Ever since then, I have had all manner of calls from various ambulance chasing companies. It appears that he is claiming his wife suffered trauma and also whiplash, despite her not being in the (parked) car at the time.

Just what on earth has gone on with insurance - it seems everyone on the take, which I guess explains the exorbitant cost of policies nowadays.

This is the damage to the parked car.

Please tell me that is a typo? £11k?

Given the colour I expect some blending is required, possibly hidden damage might there, but that is no where near £11k!

I would love to see what the quote includes but u suspect it well could include new bumper, bonnet, headlight and all of the work involved!

Most people aren't on the take. A few are but most people just want their damage repaired. And insurance isn't exorbitant. For the average bod in a normal car, it's dirt cheap. I've got quite a nice car, live in the London suburbs, and it's still sub £500. I know people paying around £150/year in more rural areas.

OK, so I might have exaggerated, it's only £10.5k

Report the incident to your own insurance company with full details and emphasise that there was nobody in it. You may as well get yours repaired too, no matter how small since it is going to be a claim now. They take a dim view of 'exaggeration.' frown

But that car based on the picture does not need a new bonnet! Let alone a new bumper.

Anyone paint tech worth their salt will be able blend that. Granted the colour will be annoying but they would have that anyway with the new parts!

To be fair to the owner of the damaged car though, would you accept anything other than insurance/dealership approved repairs ?

If I read that invoice correctly, it does seem that it's a hell of a lot complicated than just whipping off and replacing bumpers. Seems a lot of the bill is having to strip out the lights?

I thought that, but zoom in on the bonnet and it looks like she's managed to swipe along the very edge of it?

From the quote it sounds like it's a 3 stage pearl.
Blending adjacent panels may well be necessary then.... although often insurance companies won't pay for blending which is why you see so many mismatched vehicles on the road.
The rest is a piss take and the whiplash is fraud.....if you can prove it.Dashcam footage for example

The more you look, the worse it gets.

I think it's just a very unfortunate place to catch that particular car!

Just give your insurance company full details of the incident (including the possiblity that someone who wasn't in the car is now fraudulently claiming whiplash) and that there will be a third party claim for damage.

Then block the other party's number on your phone and get on with your life. Insurance companies have whole departments to deal with this kind of thing.

Your insurance might be a little more expensive for a couple of years. Whether they claim for a £1000 repair or the full £11k will make little difference to what you pay for insurance next year.

If they do the full £11k repair, take comfort that the person involved will be without their new car for months and driving round in a trashed hire company Aygo instead whilst waiting for the unnecessary new bonnet and bumper to be delivered.....

Yes I did not see that initially, having looked at the ipniq 5 in more detail this is far more than just the bumper on initial viewing and the quote.

Given it is on a swage line of the bonnet then I think they want to replace it.

The bumper hmm, mixed views imo. Given the amount of sensors there is max amount of paint it could be as little as the original paint (volvo for example don't allow repainting of bumpers due to sensors in specific areas). It well could fall into that range, hence the new bumper.

But I suspect they have just loaded everything in as it needs a new bonnet.

This sounds pretty sensible advice.
Not sure how just “catching “the car and even a brand new car results in a 20% of value repair and certainly based on the photo I’m not surprised the OP laughed.
As soon as whiplash mentioned ( when the car was empty ) might indicate more is “ made up “ and I would doubt that the Insurance company would in any event just accept one quote to repair.
On the other hand of course if this type of repair cost is average these days no wonder insurance premiums have been generally increasing way beyond inflation.

My wife was bumped into unfortunately few months back by someone running a red light and not staying in their lane. Just a light tap but dent and few scrapes.

Originally the other driver accepted liability at the scene then changed his mind. As no camera or witness it means the insurance company will go 50/50.

I tried a body shop privately and they straight up told me it was a full quarter panel and door replacement and to stick it through the insurance. Would work with me so I didn’t pay access either.

Different body shop told me £600 (same as the excess) to pull the dent out and respray.

Other driver had the check to try and claim through a crash management company with a completely bizarre story. The crash management company rang me and I provided details on the accident then they told him to get stuffed as he clearly lied.

Annoyingly we are out of pocket but no matter what be it trade in or fixing it ourselves.

Keep all the bills incurred and sue him thru the small claims court. Lots of people are happy to lie to their insurers about the circumstances, but far fewer are happy to lie under oath in court. 9 out of 10 out and out liars will not go to court, and settle the claim. If you were to go thru insurance, sue him for your excess. If you're successful, your insurers can then automatically recover their outlay in full so the 50/50 no longer applies.

The correct course of action is to inform your insurance company of the circumstances, tell the other person that they need to make a claim from your insurance company, and then move on with your life. There is nothing else you need to do. If you receive any further whiplash claims, pass these on to your insurance company also, and then resume moving on with your life.

Firstly, it is not the insurance companies that are doing this it is the third party and the the body shop, they probably already have an ambulance chaser on the case giving them a hire car at £400 per day plus costs, storage, the bodyshop will sit on the car for 3 weeks before any works starts so do not be surprised when the total bill comes in at £20k +

Yes insurers need to investigate and do more to stop thes e scams but everyones on the take and we all pay for it.
