It really depends on the product.

Loose fruit can be 'new', even if it's been mauled by lots of people.

A car is usually 'new', even if it has delivery mileage on it and had a repair during the PDI.

But for any white goods, for it to be sold as 'new' I'd say it has to be in its original external and internal packaging, and in the same condition as it left the factory.

If it has had a tyre fitted, then it is not new.

I would be sending it back and asking for a new replacement

For a car related item I'd say as long as it hasn't been fitted it counts as new. If it has been removed from the sealed bag or box to compare to the original, for example, that would be new.

New is sealed packaging*.
Anything else isn't - see the bay of e.
e.g. open box/return/refurbished.

*Where applicable. Although even my last (and probably the last I'll buy) new car had a cover taken off with a flourish as part of the sale "experience".

It does depend on the product and also if it's been returned how that impacts it's use.

For example I bought a watch from Amazon, claimed to be brand new. When opened all the seals were broken, tags removed (but in box) and hand written label on the back. That to me felt like a used item and having no idea the actual age, the battery could go much earlier etc.

For a solid mechanical item which hasn't been 'used' as such I might be a bit less fussy.

It is a bit disappointing when you spend your hard earned on something new and someone has had their grubby little mitts on it! haha

eBay have this one covered. I often sell parts that come with cars or have bought by error rolleyes and there is the category new (other). For parts, it's if they've never been used or fitted, or the box has been opened. For cars themselves, they're no longer 'new' once it's been registered.

A friend of mine insists (brags really) that he only buys 'new' cars nowadays, but he doesn't. They're usually ex-demo or cancelled orders with very low mileages, ostensibly 'new' but not really. And it's been a lot harder this year for him to change...

Unused and unspoiled.

Spoiled would count if packaging has been opened but unopened packaging has a value

It’s not new.
If it had been sold with a correct description of condition then it wouldn’t be a problem.

How is a car that you purchase from a main dealer as a “cancelled order” not “new”?

Didn't get into it and drive it off the production line yourself? Not new mate. hehe

I perhaps should explain they are already registered when my friend goes looking, so will have one previous owner, even if it's only weeks, so not 'new.' smile

This. Car stuff if its opened and handled is still new, fitted it's second hand.

For other stuff like home electronics it's second hand the minute it's out of the packaging IMO.

If it's a part then if it hasn't been fitted/used then it's new, not a difficult concept to grasp.

Always amazes me when people buy a product for say£120 and then try and sell it for £100 as almost new…to me it needs to be almost half the price or you may as well buy it new.

Bought oil and oil filter for a BMW X1 in local motor factors. Oil filter box obviously been opened and paper element had oily hand prints on it but obviously new and unused. They knocked £4 off the price of it. Happy enough with that.
