Hi all

Unfortunately my father in law has fallen for the below "scam" and has singed up for a service this morning to manage his car tax, after google "tax my car". His bank has cancelled all future payments and told him he needs to suck this one up.

https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/61...

The thing is, there doesn't actually seem to be any money taken yet to actually tax the car.

Does anyone know what we should do? Will this "service" actually tax it? Or should we SORN and re-tax on 30th May/ 1st June?

I mean i did think of that. It's still taxed and "due" 1st June of course. No tax payment showing up in the bank yet, but DVLA website says "up to 5 days".

So, is this "service" real? Are they effectively managing your car affairs for you and using your CC on your behalf to pay for things? Will they have automatically bought the tax?

Or has he been purely scammed?

It is a scam -the only place you can buy real car tax from is via the Gov website or the post office.
As such I'm not sure why your Bank is saying its not a scam !

Sorry meant to add that your FIL can tell the Bank to stop any payments going out to the details he ( incorrectly ) gave especially if arranged on a direct debit basis.

Barclays: "I can cancel your payments in the future. We cannot reverse this one because it is to a legitimate business offering a legitimate service"

Except it isn't !
Might be worth speaking to their complaints dept instead or indeed trying to find a local branch to go in to explain to hopefully someone that might understand it.
Failing that email their CEO who will pass it to their executive team to look at.

I'd say they aren't going to tax it. A neighbour signed up for a similar scam and they didn't pay DVLA anything. First she knew about it was when she was pulled for no tax 6 months later.

Thanks

I'm going round there later, armed with a virtual card from my revolut to tax it on the correct website and then making the card disappear. hehe

Why is it a scam ?

Have you actually had a look at the site ? https://ww1.vehicleinformation.uk

It doesn't imply or pretend to be the DVLA and it makes no mention of paying for road tax (as far as I could se on my quick scan of it)

I'm not sure why anyone would subscribe to this - but it does seem to be a legitimate business offering a legitimate service.

Most of these sites do pay the DVLA for tax, but charge higher amounts to cover their fees. Always lots of them popping up for bridge and tunnel tolls.

Edit to add - use this Gov.uk site to check if tax has been renewed - https://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-tax

It's not a real scam though.

Most will do what they say they're just charging a fee for something you can do yourself for free.

A quick google of the word scam brings up - A scam is any means someone uses to get you to part with your money.
First page of that site is trying a little to emulate a Gov UK site.
Whether legitimate or not, as you say I guess people do subscribe because they think its a Gov website.

Whether real or otherwise it ends up causing at the very least confusion or worry to those that unfortunately " get taken in by it " as evidenced by the OP.
Clearly no one on PH would ever ever pay a fee for something they can do themselves but in the real world there are those that do.

It looks like a pretty pointless "service", but I don't think it's a scam, assuming they actually provide the checks they say they do.

I can't see where it claims to pay the VED, or why anyone wold think that.

How exactly did they find this site? Top/sponsored result from typing "car tax" into Google, something like that?

I almost got caught out when renewing an EHIC, but knew it should be free. But again a top google search result was an organisation that would do the 'legwork' for you for a fee. Quite easy to be tricked if you don't know the official website address.

And not helped by some legitimate services like the Post Office who will check your passport application so it doesn't get rejected, all for an additional fee.

It doesn't until I think you have registered.
I guess we don't even know if that site is the same site as persuaded the OP's FIL to sign up .
If that site is a offering a service that simply reminds you to pay your tax etc ( presumably for more than one vehicle ) then fine and down to the individual to decide to use or not but when its a free service to renew your tax anyway I still maintain it doesn't feel right.
Back to the OP though -I still don't understand why the Bank cannot just cancel the direct debit to pay them ?
