Vauxhall Astra 1.6 Turbo SRi | Shed of the Week

The Astra used to play a crucial part in any fleet manager's playbook - now, it's grist to Shed's mill

Per ardua ad astra. Many of you will recognise this as the stirring official motto of the RAF. If, unlike Shed, you're not a devoted student of Latin, the English translation of it is 'through adversity to the stars'.

For many company car drivers in the late 1980s, the adversity you had to go through in order to get to the Astra you wanted was the fleet manager, who was often a sweaty bloke with a boiled sweet addiction and a BO problem. You thought you were well worthy of a redtop 2.0 GTE but he would only give you a blacktop 1.2 E, grrr.

The redtop Mk 2 'E' GTE of 1988 was a twin-cammer that chucked out 156hp/150lb ft, which in such a light car (997kg) was enough to deliver an impressive 7.0-second-0-60mph time. Twenty years later the Astra was into the facelift version of its fifth 'H' generation and the folk on the production line at Ellesmere Port were sending today's very shed – a 1.6 Turbo SRi – out through the gates and into the wide world.

How did things change for the hot Astras over those two decades? Well, even with 178hp (10hp up on the 2.0 Astra Turbo that it was replacing, and more than 20hp up on the Mk 2 GTE) the gen-five 1.6 Turbo SRi didn't bring quite as much acceleration-inspired colour to a passenger's cheeks as that old GTE did, based on a fag packet rounding-down of its 7.8-second-0-62mph time to 7.6 for the 0-60. That's what safety-boosting weight will do to a car's performance.

It was a handy engine though, that turbo 1.6, with minimal lag, good refinement on the motorway, better performance than the outgoing gen-five 2.0 Turbo and 6mpg better economy too at 36.7mpg. Bottom-end urge was especially impressive thanks to the 170lb ft of torque that came in at under 2,000rpm and continued to 5,500rpm, with 196lb ft of overboost available in five-second chunks and a well-ratioed six-speed box to keep things boiling along. No wonder Vauxhall used the same unit in the usefully rowdy VXR Corsa.

The Astra SRi's ride and handling weren't quite up to Focus standards but they weren't far off. There was strong grip and very little traction scrabble. The dampers were switchable to a Sport setting that hefted up the steering and sharpened up the throttle response.

Our shed doesn't appear to have the desirable pano roof option but it does have the Exterior Pack which (Shed thinks) amounted to colour-coded front and rear air dams, a boot spoiler and five-spoke 18in Penta alloys which look to be in good fettle here. Leather loveliness on the inside, no big worries on the six-month-old MOT cert, and an Astra-sized boot to toss your takeaway wrappers into, all for a quid short of our £2k maximum. Job's a good 'un.

Now, as Shed sometimes says to the postmistress, here's a small diversion. Shed chose not to cover it here because he did one quite recently and this one will probably have been sold by the time this story goes live anyway, but if you're looking for a summer car at what seems like a good price here's a 2009 Mk 3 MX-5.

It's only a 1.8, so it’s just 124hp, but it has no stated faults, not many miles and an unconcerning MOT history, all for a measly £1,750. All it seems to need is a thundering good wash. Of course, there might be all sorts of other nastiness lurking beneath the surface grime. Shed knows that from the rare occasions that he has a proper wash.

Looks decent enough but still a ‘nope’ just because it’s a Vauxhall and would make me sad.

Interesting stock selection that MX5 dealer has. Don’t think I’d buy anything from them, though ??

Looks like a clean shed. Whereas that MX5 would need a serious valet, plus it’ll stand a very strong chance of being an absolute rotter underneath.

Now that is a PROPER shed. None of your badly modified German premium tat this week.

I’d happily tool around in that - looks super clean and well presented too. Bargain in the current pricing madness!

Not the same model but I had a 57 plate Astra Elite 1.9 CDTi. car was spot on in the 4/5 years I owned it , only sold.it as last couple of Mot's it was a struggle getting through Emissions.

This car the leather interior looks similar to in my Elite , this been the 1.6T Sri you don't see a lot of them .

Article mentions Astra GTE 16V I also had 1 a G plate 30 years ago certainly better than this Astra H , it's 1 of my old cars I wish now years later I still owned.

Still in the days of over paying this doesn't look a bad motor, should have kept hold of my Astra another year but we didn't know covid would happen and prices of car's inflate.

Great shed. Has the look of something newer and more expensive than what it is. Nice in white with these wheels.

Ah, those wonderful days when Vauxhall created a dashboard that looked as angular and interesting as Lego, even down to the square-section steering column stalks.
Surprised they didn’t go the whole hog and make the steering wheel that shape too…

Peak Astra for me so long as has a stronger engine. The dirty high powered diesel versions were very good cruisers and I did big miles and the VXR I thought was a heck of a lot of fun. Also the styling to me looked crisp and the blobby gen after a real retrograde step - they were seemingly well built too.

Oddly I didn't think the SRI spec was best - more brittle suspension but not enough power to offset the loss of comfort, but it seemed popular so that could be me - I think there was one called Dynamic (I may have that wrong) which seemed to suit the car better.

This looks clean and tidy and if you need decent swiftish transport - good shed!

Owned a 07 plate one in power red for a good 10 years and some 70k miles. The description is wrong, there was no adaptive dampers, 'sport' mode just changed the steering and throttle response. Mine had the upgraded colour screen with satnav, which I think helped make the centre console look slightly more modern than the standard on-board computer screen.

Overall was a reliable car, the engine was really good, but towards the end of its life the gearbox would have issues after long journeys, felt like changing gear in treacle and would lose its spring loaded self centring. The 6 speed M32 gearbox in these cars were well known to have bearing failures, especially the 150 CDTi version which produced the maximum torque that gearbox could apparently take.

The Vauxhall hate has started already biggrin

It's a shed, a tool, and is cheap, make doesn't matter at this price level.

These I bet are a hell of alot more reliable and dependable than most others things at this end of the market, albeit would prefer the non-turbo NA engine, for complete shed nirvana.

You could go a lot further and do a lot worse. It looks pretty clean and well presented, too. Probably a rarity for Vauxhall's of this vintage....

That looks a nice find and (dare I say....) too good for a shed! If it's as good in the flesh as the photos seem to suggest, that could be a decent motor for not a lot of money (I'm finally coming to terms with where the market is in terms of prices!).

I also like the look of that mx5 - could be a cheap base from which to turbo it. As long as there's not too much rust...... hang on, I'm just come to my senses, of course there's rust!! laugh

I'd be happy enough in that, a good shed I reckon.

I dispute the article's alleged effects of the Sport button. Me and a mate from work had one of these as a rental for a couple of days. Pressing the Sport button produced absolutely no perceivable effect whatsoever, to our great amusement.

The perfect shed to run into the ground with a modicum of entertainment along the way.

That said, Vauxhall really did excel at making bland interiors in this generation of cars.

Sport button - VX salesman told me on a test drive it changed the gearing 🤣 Couldn't advise how...

I like it, dash notwithstanding, I had a H plate GTE 16v (3yo, cost £4k!) back when insurance killed hot hatch values, brilliant engine wrapped in a poor chassis. Loved the digital dash mind

That MX5 will be rotten as a pear underneath.

Bland interior aside, I don't think these have aged too badly at all. Like a previous poster mentioned, it seems to have stood the test of time well and whilst most you'll see are either CDTi or N/A petrol, this little turbo lump seems to be a more unusual spec. You can do a lot worse with £2k than buy this.

That actually looks pretty clean for the cash. If it looks like that in the flesh, it’s probably a great car.

That interior though is awful. I hated it at the time (friend had one when they were new) and time hasn’t made it look any better.
