We all like to analyse a good dashcam video and lay the finger of blame.

Anyone got any thoughts on this one?

One of them was me, before anyone asks. Not even going to say 'it's a friend'.

Easy to say that the cam car should have been driving more defensively but the Nissan note is at fault 100%

In truth, there are two questions here
a) who was at fault?
b) who had the best view of the developing situation to avoid it?

Different answers to each question.

It is car on the left 100%. I had exactly the same accident though back when I was 19/20 from the position of the dashcam car (except I didn't have a dashcam) and it went 50/50 on insurance. Since then I never trust cars in the left lane and drive more defensively.

As above - 100% the car on the left. That car had to change lanes to hit the cam car.

It's as clear cut to me as if you're passing someone on a dual carriageway and they change lanes into your side.

Car on the left is already established on the roundabout though, and lane indication is for guidance only.

Personally, I wouldn't have stuck my head there until they had committed to the exit.

Having said that, car on the left is a fkwit and should have exited.

It'll go 50/50.
Exactly this ^^^^^^^^^^

I probably avoid one of these accidents every couple of months, you simply have to drive hugely defensively on roundabouts, you never know what the other lunatics on the road are going to do.

after playing it back several times I think you can just about make out their indicator come on at 00:08, it's hard to see with the low sun
seems certainly their fault though, no mirror check. lucky you weren't on a bike

The other car, without doubt. Crossed over lanes into camera car.

This is another example of why I never overtake or sit next to anybody on a roundabout. Roundabouts are magic and confusing beings which are designed to bamboozle incompetent motorists.

Legally the car in the left lane can carry on past that exit, but in practice nobody really expects it so you end up with exactly the accident that happened.

Lots of "should haves" - the Nissan should have indicated. The OP should have held back, aware that the Nissan might carry on past the exit. The Nissan would have been better off in the right hand lane. The OP shouldn't have been using the roundabout as an overtaking opportunity.

Its one of those situations where the legal position is different to the "normal practice" that we see on the road every day

Just to add, a good example of how to ‘blind spot’ another driver.
Always imagine the other driver is wearing blinkers (like a racehorse), and is only looking ahead.

Technically, the OP crossed over the Nissan's lane.

Car in the left would have to change lanes to continue round the roundabout, his lane goes off the roundabout at that exit.

Car on the left is braking and driving not confidently and then right indicator comes on so arguably car on right should perhaps have held back.
Whilst car on left is to blame could well go 50/50 with this dashcam.

You just carry on driving. He's a fkwit because he didn't look and didn't even look like he was going to turn right. Normally, dogsts start to edge into your lane without signalling.

Be interesting to know how experienced the driver of the camera car is.

When I find myself in the same position I assume that the person on the left might continue around the roundabout and I make sure I'm sufficiently in front or behind them for me to exit without our paths crossing.

Clearly the left lane led straight onto the exit and was marked in such a way as not to present the driver of the Note with the opportunity to continue around the roundabout, but they did anyway. I always work on the assumption that the other guy is oblivious to my presence, blind and stupid. This philosophy has served me well over the years.

For reference, the car driver on the left said to me he was going straight on and thought he had missed his turn so decided to go round again....doh

Agreed - the Nissan could legally have gone for the next exit as he didn't cross a solid white line... But, if you're going to change lanes (which they most certainly did) then the obligation is on you to check that the lane you're moving into is clear and it wasn't.

Could see that was going to happen miles off.

In situations like that you need to either speed up and get past them before you are even near the exit or slow down and don't sit next to them.

Personally if I didn't overtake them on the roundabout I wouldn't even pass them until the road straightened on the dual because no doubt they would swing straight away into lane two and sit there.

I agree too - car on left changed lanes when it wasn't safe to do so.

OP could have avoided it by maintaining the "safety cell".
