Hi guys,

My wife’s Astra rear passenger door suddenly stopped working. Couldn’t open it from the outside or inside.Left it two weeks and decided to get a local garage to look at it.

In the end the garage replaced the lock unit at a price of £140. The labour was £63 and then the VAT on top.

Total price was £240.

It’s a 2009 hatchback.

Does this seem a lot to replace a new door lock unit? Were we ripped off or is this about right?

Sounds about right. Thats a good price on the labour, and no idea what a price of a lock would be. I would say you havent been ripped off.

Seconded. Cursory google suggests a new lock is £170 inc VAT (https://www.autovaux.co.uk/13220373-door-lock-as13220373). Labour probably £60 per hour. Time spent diagnosing, stripping down door, removal of lock, adjustments, testing and reassembly sounds like a good hour's work.

If you DIY'd you'd probably get a second hand lock cheaper for say, £50 and I've no doubt youtube would show you how to fit it.

Sadly right, I had to replace the drivers door lock on my 2014 Volvo V40 hatch and it was around £400 from a dealer.

Car is basically just a Ford Focus underneath.

It's a common fault on the V40's of that age unfortunately. Any/all of the door locks can fail. Mine failed locked, so I couldn't even open the door.
