Roadside recovery recommendations
Discussion
Hi,
Im sure this has been done to death here but Im seeking a provider and looking for opinions.
The AA, RAC seem much more expensive than others on the comparison sites. At the moment Green Flag for two cars comes in at about 100 quid (Home start and recovery).
Then you go lower down the list and its 30/40 quid for a non known company that I assume sub out recovery?
The cars are 17 plates and never likely to be that problematic but I'm thinking where a lot of these sub out companies fall down is when you phone them and the scenario of sitting on the motorway on hold and waiting in the pissing down rain!

AA definitely a lot more expensive ( you can negotiate ) but never had any issues when I've needed to use them.
Breaking down in the middle of winter needing a recovery is not when you want to discover the cheapest cover isn't actually very good !
This has been my take on it.Breaking down in the middle of winter needing a recovery is not when you want to discover the cheapest cover isn't actually very good !
AA cover for me and the Mrs is cheaper than individual car specific cover for all four cars (two daily drivers, a kitcar, and a vintage) and having used breakdown cover a couple of times in my life, it is certainly worth what you pay even before you have young children.
I have also been caught short without, once when I had accidently taken out 'recovery to nearest garage' rather than recovery home when I was 2hours drive from home one Sunday night, and once when my phone was flat, no charger, didn't have the name/number of my insurer to hand, late at night, rural location. Neither where much fun.
We cycle between her taking out the cover and me a bit, which often gets better 'introduction' rates rather than renewing which is a pain but also ok.

They wouldn't recover my sister in law when her car left the road due to 'black ice'. Apparently their cover doesn't, or certainly didn't, include vehicles off the road.Breaking down in the middle of winter needing a recovery is not when you want to discover the cheapest cover isn't actually very good !

I wonder whether she had the recovery option paid for in advance ?I've just googled and under the definition of roadside assistance it says-roadside assistance after a breakdown or accident that involves the emergency services isn't covered - but it's not clear whether if recovery is included does that exclusion still apply ?
It's a good point though as I guess if the case does that also apply to other companies ?
I find that a packaged bank account works for me. £10 a month for Lloyds Silver gives me Family travel insurance, AA Roadside (but not Home) cover, and mobile phone insurance.
But I self-insured for a long time. Just took the chance that I could Google the nearest recovery garage(s) and deal directly with them and pay a couple of hundred quid to be recovered if ever I needed it.

The AA is currently half price on their website! £90 for two person family cover, any car, national recovery!Remember with Autoaid if you break down in an older car its a £25 surcharge payable at the time.
Still good value but if you broke down twice in a year you'd soon be out of pocket.
I'm still with them (never needed them but ncd's don't apply) and have been for a long time but will be looking elsewhere at next renewal, previous to this surcharge they used to cover repeat customer's older cars included in the premium.
