Hi all

Bit of a wierd one here. Will try to summarise best I can.

My grandfather passed away a couple of months ago after a short stint in hospital. He's got a typically old-person, low mileage old Ford on the driveway that he's owned since nearly-new in 2003.

My mum recently found what we think is the only log book for the car. But it is the old style blue one and not a new-format red one.

When he passed away, mum used the "tell us once" service to try to inform people of the passing. Mum is saying that as part of that process "the DVLA removed his name from the log book" although we're not really clear what this means. The v11 reminder was used to SORN the car shortly before he passed away.

The insurance is still in effect as my mum was a named driver on the car. My mum is the executor of the estate if this matters.

Now we've come to sorting the house out and selling the car, I wanted to tax it so i could drive it to my house and clean/ sell it for her, but i can't. The doc ref num doesn't work (guess that's because a red one would have been sent at some point) and the v11 reminder won't let us tax it.

What's my options? I tried to do a v62 online, but that fails and tells me i have "4 chances to get the details right before being locked". DVLA are typically unavailable on the phone.

Any advice greatly appreciated about where to go next. Could i tax it at a PO without the right numbers or are they seeing the same online system hooks we are?

Apply for a v5 as a new owner (as that is what you are) v5c is the form, you can get it from the post office.

Wait 4-6weeks and you will have a log book in your name, use this plus a new insurance policy in the name of a living person to tax the car (assuming it has a valid MOT).

If no MOT then MOT it between insurance and tax steps.

Thanks. But to apply for a new v5 as a new RK will require returning a green slip, which i don't have because i don't have the "Red" v5? would the one from the "blue" one work?

I had a similar situation when I inherited the Morris from my late father.

I wrote a letter to the DVLA with a copy of the death certificate, and they sent back a very nice sympathetic letter and the V5 in my name quite quickly

If you have the time, this might be a good option.

Good luck!

You can apply via the V62 form, and change the keeper etc at the same time: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/applica...

But as above contact the bereavement team first and see what they say imho

Thanks

Contacted these guys just now. They have referred us to the PO, armed with MOT proof and the (old blue) v5 with the green slipped filled out. They have said it can be taxed immediately this way and they'll remove/ send the v5 to DVLA

Yes the post office can tax it using the bar code on the new keeper slip don’t tell them about the back story and don’t give them the full log book just the v5c new keepe slip. Usually works fine.
