Alfa confirms new supercar reveal for August

Alfa's CEO has been excitedly hinting at its 'iconic' new model for months; the wait is nearly over

Alfa’s long-mooted supercar is due to be unveiled in Milan next month, its CEO has revealed. Speaking in China at the presentation of the latest Giulia and Stelvio, Jean-Philippe Imparato announced that ‘the world premiere of an iconic car’ would take place at the Alfa Romeo Museum on August 30th. PH understands that the new ’specialty’ model referred to is the supercar the firm has quietly been taking deposits on for some time, without ever showing it publicly.

"This project is a dream come true, inspired by a daring team that wanted to achieve something unique,” noted Imparato via a press release. While the CEO has hinted at the nature of the supercar since the spring - and insisted that it would be sold out long before the covers were taken off - it is not known exactly what form the new supercar will take. ‘An expression of true Alfa Romeo DNA’ is the line taken in the release, and Imparato has been widely quoted as saying that his team were working on something which could comfortably sit aside the 8C in the brand’s museum.

Both factors suggest it has lent heavily on its heritage, with some tipping the 1967 33 Stradale as the chief point of inspiration. That would certainly live up the ‘Dare to Dream’ tagline chosen for the new car, given that the mid-engined original was based on a racing prototype and featured butterfly doors. Something more in the mould of the V8-powered 8C would seem more feasible (the name ‘6C’ has already been proposed) although with production volume almost certain to be on an ultra-exclusive scale, anything is possible.

That includes means of propulsion, with Alfa declining to say whether or not it has attempted to marry retro design with a forward-looking EV powertrain. Certainly that would align with Tuesday’s announcement being made in China, where the manufacturer hopes to reach 40 per cent of its sales outside Europe. But let’s hope not, eh? The unveiling itself occurs in the same week as the Italian Grand Prix at Monza; let’s hope that Alfa uses that event as the conceptual jumping off point for something idiosyncratically loud and truly beautiful.

Why use a picture with very badly photoshopped wheels?

8C was indeed a spectacularly classy looking thing, first one I ever saw out in the wild was whilst outside at the Le Tertre Rouge Bar on the perimeter of the Le Mans circuit whilst attending the Classic, of all the exotica passing this was the one that had everyone stop, point and discuss.

It’ll be based on something else and be super limited edition. Mark my words.

It’ll also be beautiful ☹️

good news, I hope its not that big, personally I found the 8C just like the BMW Z8 bigger then I thought in the pictures, you think ow its ala Z3 big, but put a Z3 next to it and feel small (the Z3)

Yep, 8C is absolutely gorgeous. Pity the styling cues didn't filter down to the rest of the range at that time.

I hope this forthcoming supercar takes cues form the 33 Stradale.

I have a deep hatred of 'halo' cars. They always strike me as a 'while Rome burns Caeser fiddles' type thing.

Alfa is in real trouble, they need clear and decisive models that build and expand into a range with really clear resolve and definition. Instead time is spent on this, when resources are finite they divert effort to a vanity project.

So we get a supercar that even if it wows is unlikely to sell almost any additional units of the actual cars that are needed to make money, and frankly shouldn't this be a Maserati? How many people rushed off and bought a nice new Alfa cos they built the 8c.

Right I'm off to be grumpy about the colour of the flowers in my garden....

You mean, Nero. Not Caeser.

But you make a valid point.

let's hope it is as well sorted as the Guilia, beautiful as the 8C and not as rubbish or square as the 4C.
Love the grill design so far.

I'm not stalking you, but as an 8c owner did you get an invite to buy one or early access to see what it was?

Also, are you getting one?

I'm not sure. The value of halo cars is underappreciated, but the connection to the rest of the range has to tangible and their existence persistent.

In the last decade Alfa showed they could "do it" with proper, range-linked halo models - but as ever there's a feeling that it's a once in a generation effort and the next model cycle will be back to nice-looking dross.
