Incoming MG EX4 concept a tribute to Metro 6R4

MG is going to start selling the 435hp MG4 XPower in the UK this month - what better way to promote it at FoS?

There’s a real buzz around MG Motor at the moment – in a good way, we should clarify. We’re not talking about a fried inverter or a loose bit of trim. We mean about the quality and value of the models it’s currently fielding, along with the models it’s readying in the background. The Cyberster two-seater convertible is one of the potential stars of the future, for instance, which is being shown at the Goodwood FoS, while the MG4 Trophy is one that you can buy today. Mike found fond words for that, such as it’s a ‘genuine hoot to drive’.

There’s more, too. MG Motor has just announced pricing for the MG4 EV Xpower in the UK, which will be its most powerful production car to date. With twin motors and all-wheel drive, it’s properly powerful, delivering 435hp and 443lb ft, so it’ll hit 0-62mph in just 3.8 seconds. Yet, when it arrives on the shelves later this month, it’ll cost £36,495 – no doubt with all the mod cons included. It’s not only a performance upgrade, though, because it comes with 25 per cent stiffer suspension thanks to a ‘comprehensive series of suspension upgrades’ that includes recalibrated springs and dampers, beefier anti-roll bars and sharper steering.

And if that’s still not wetted your whistle, there’s more. And by more, we mean something that sounds a bit special – the sort of thing that might be the final nail in the coffin of Chinese MG’s underwhelming image; something to stick it back on the map big time. If we say it’s being touted as a reimagined Metro 6R4, hopefully you get where we're coming from. It’s confirmed only as a concept at this stage, and underpinning it is the same drivetrain and Modular Scalable Platform as the MG4 EV Xpower. It’ll be wearing proudly a ‘distinctive livery designed especially for Goodwood and celebrates the 40th anniversary of the Metro 6R4’.

Come on, even the most diehard cynics among you must see some joy in that? And the more love it gets, surely the more chance there is of it going into production. Still a no? Well, look, we aim to please here at PH. If you’re still unimpressed, then have a look at the MST 6R4 we brought to your attention earlier in the year. There you go, something for everyone.

£37k seems reasonable for the performance. Wonder if there will be any reasonably priced lease deals…

That front splitter looks like it'd be great for shovelling up Uighurs and political dissidents.

That splitter isn't legal is it? Would be a PITA to drive with that anyway.

It doesn't need to be legal, it's a concept car

Oh I read that headline wrong - it's a concept car to promote a far more boring and ugly car, they got a Google search from me out of it anyway.

Seeing the pic and not reading the headline, for a moment I thought ford had changed it mind on a Focus RS....

Seeing more and more of the MG4's. I am not going to comment on the politics, most money leads back there or Saudi these days, but if it brings down the price of quick leccy motoring for leccy lovers than fair enough. Id however take an original 6r4 and go deaf or have to walk most places...

I’m not in the market for this kind of thing but 425 bhp EV hot hatch for 36k sounds extremely exciting.

People seem to wet themselves for a similar power figure in a RS3 or S3 for considerably more money.

Who would have thought MG would get an hit hatch out before the Germans.

Forget the concept thing - that XPower is astonishing for the money! The new Golf R? Possibly, seeing as the actual Golf R now costs loads and the VW EVs are ste. hehe

Better giving your money to a European company I reckon.

'If' its truely a tribute to the 6R4, then MG should go rallying with it.

Not really. The Chinese just bought a brand and now they're exploiting its heritage. The MST 6R4 is a much more fitting tribute to the original.

That 'value for money' comes at huge environmental and human cost, as others here have already alluded to. There are few health and safety laws or working time directives in China and what do exist are easily ignored.

That's before you get to materials sustainability or traceability. Polestar lead the way on this (see below) followed by BMW. Tesla are (so far) famously slippy in this respect.

In other China news today;

I can't fathom why anyone would even contemplate buying an MG from the CCP right now.

At least EVs give you a choice. I'm stuck with buying petrol from journalist-chopping, fundamentalist pricks.

Almost none of your (UK) oil comes from the middle east. 70% from Norway and US. 0.2% comes from Saudi.

If the price of 37K is accurate that will be serious value. We paid £31k for the trophy version and my wife really rates it.

so is it something like this with spoileralert? euh spoilers?

https://www.pistonheads.com/news/electric-vehicles...

hope the (wide?) bodykit makes it a better looker, first see then believing.

also 4.30 meter long, is way way longer then the 6R4 which is chunky, if they use a 4-door, hope not, hope a short max 4 meter.
