Retention Certificate transfer
Discussion
I've got very confused about the process - I'm sure someone here is an expert and can help.
I loaned a number plate to a mate for a few years and now he's giving it back... I want to put it on retention in my name.
He has the retention certificate. He'll sign this as the Grantee and my details will be entered as the Nominee - is that it?
Reading the various forms it seems that I need to assign it to a vehicle to have the ownership back - but it all looks a bit vague! Just being the Nominee doesn't seem like it's transferring it back to me.
Sorry - it's probably really easy, but it's one of those things you don't want to balls up and lose the plate.
Thanks...

It will, however be in the name of the last registered keeper of the car it was removed from, yes. With the OP as the nominee, that's how it works. This is free but not really necessary as long as you are given the certificate. It will have 10 year time limit. This can be extended for free, but ONLY by the named person on the certificate (V750).

I've bought and sold a few reg numbers and since it can all be done online, all you need is the certificate number really. Only when it's on a vehicle in your name will you be it's owner again. Be thankful there's no annual 'admin' fee of £25 like there used to be.

I was wondering about this, the ten year limit can be extended for free?
Yeah I remember when it cost £25 a year to renew the certificate. The govt must have lost so much money making it last ten years (probably not as they're just getting us elsewhere)

You can apply to renew your V750 or V778 up to 28 days before it expires. Do not apply earlier than this or your application may be refused.
You’ll get a reminder letter or email if you’re not using a private number and your right to use it is about to run out.
You can renew it for up to 10 years, and it does not cost anything to do.
It's already on retention so the only way to become Grantee is to put it on a vehicle and retain again. If doing this all online then the vehicle needs to be in your name.
If the vehicle isn't in your name then you'll be needing a paper form, and a cheque, to retain it listing you as the Grantee

A mate is giving me his registration number which he no longer wants to use or keep - no money involved.
It is already on a retention certificate registered in his name at his current address, so not on a car.
Can anyone please explain the process of basically changing his name and address to mine, without me putting it on a car?
Who has to do it, me or him?
Many thanks for any input in advance.

To bet it in your name you need to assign it to car for which you are registered keeper and then retain it.It is already on a retention certificate registered in his name at his current address, so not on a car.

Having your mates name on it should not be an issue. You can still assign it to whichever you want and as it is your mate you have no worries about him assigning the plate to one of his vehicles behind your back.

Having finally got through to DVLA if anyone finds themselves in a similar position the only way to do this without putting it on a car is:It is already on a retention certificate registered in his name at his current address, so not on a car.

Mate fills in my name to section 2 for me to become the 'Nominee'
Mate signs section 6
Post back to DVLA
Retention certificate comes back to my mate at his address with me now added on as the 'nominee' and I can put it on a car any time before the retention certificate expires. Only the 'Grantee' can renew it.
So you don't need to put it on a car now but you will need to before it expires in X number of years time or the 'Grantee' can renew it and it all starts again.
