Wild Manthey Kit launched for Cayman GT4 RS

Downforce almost doubled and 'ring lap slashed with a little help from Manthey Racing

It was clear from the first UK road drive that the 718 Cayman GT4 RS was an unashamed track car. It could tolerate use on the public highway, but perhaps more than any comparable Porsche its demeanour almost demanded circuit use. So it should come as no surprise at all to find there’s now a Manthey Kit for the 500hp 718, making the most of its ability on track in a similar fashion to those upgrades seen for recent GT3s.

The big news is a six-second improvement in the car’s Nordschleife lap time, which feels pretty significant with the same amount of power and identical Michelin Cup 2R tyres as before. (The improvement was four seconds for the GT3.) It also means a Porsche Cayman with an officially recognised lap of 7:03.121, which is madness. Remember the furore around a 918 Spyder going 6:57? That was only a decade ago. Porsche says the upgrade package ‘was developed in Meuspath especially for track days and in close collaboration between engineers at Porsche Motorsport and the Nordschleife specialists at Manthey.’

Aero understandably plays a bit part in the performance improvement, with an 85mm wider rear wing (that also has larger endplates), as well as a new carbon underbody, wheelarch Gurney flap and air curtain up front. Manthey has even go so far as reinforcing the rear engine cover ‘to be able to withstand the higher aerodynamic forces’ and, in what’s becoming its signature touch, fitted the rear aerodiscs to reduce turbulence. The important number from these changes is 169kg; that’s the total downforce claimed for a Manthey-modified car at 124mph, whereas it’s 89kg in a standard car.

As if any further proof were required of the intent of the Manthey Kit, this GT4 RS has spring rates 20 per cent stiffer at the front than normal - a car famous for its unapologetic nature. In addition, the new coilover set-up can be adjusted in compression, rebound and four sprint strut settings without tools, which will be music to the ears of those who simply must fettle (or should that be fiddle?) in a pitlane. Those with a nose lift will be doubly pleased, moreover, as there’s a version of the kit for cars equipped with it. The package is rounded off by uprated steel brake lines for ‘an exact pressure point’, while those really keen to get the most from the ceramic discs can pay more to get racing pads.

Speaking of which, there a few cosmetic bits that can be added while getting the Manthey goodness for a GT4 - Porsche’s majority ownership was always going to have an influence somewhere. So there are Manthey-branded illuminated door sills available, as well as towing loops and wheel arch vents just like a Weissach Packed car. What might actually be of interest to buyers is a CFRP rear spoiler attachment, adding a further four per cent of rear axle downforce.

The end result is predictably pretty nuts, the composure and stability shown by a humble Cayman in the Nordschleife’s fastest (and scariest) bits really something to behold. Of course, the ordinary GT4 RS is hardly bad in this regard, but the Manthey Kit makes it even better still - and who doesn’t want better? Especially when it’s easy to get: this will be sold by Porsche Centres, with a European launch scheduled for December. Expect a price on the Tequipment website very soon. Means a few more months to get hold of one, too…

Would love to see some data on those rear wheel covers. I presume to reduce drag or increase effectiveness of the rear wing/diffuser.

What a way to celebrate Porsche being one of the few manufacturers left to put nice-looking wheels on their cars, by hiding them behind 'aerodynamic' disc covers for the track performance... hurl

With larger overhangs and general silliness, making it look like a 911. Well done.

Given how many have already been flipped, when apparently they were only for Porsches best customers, I can't see many wanting to add this kit on given it'll probably affect the value.

Plus, very few will see a road let alone a track.

Before this descends into people moaning too much about prices and flippers, I'll say that I think it's epic. I don't care about the money or the owners. It's mega.

Why would you bother considering a flipped GT4 RS if it is the same price as a flipped 992 GT3?

Also, if you're going to just use this on track (and make it even worse as a road car), why bother with a Porsche at all?

Just buy a race car and trailer and be done with it.

I've been lucky enough to complete over 500 miles in a 'normal' GT4RS earlier this week and what a glorious time it was albeit lots of the Peak District driving was very wet! The car felt excellent on the road, suspension was left in comfort.

Having also driven and MR equipped GT2RS, the MR kit has made it awesome on a lumpy bumpy b road, i'd be inclined to think the GT4RS MR kit would be the same, despite the stiffer spring rates! A lot of the harshness (or not) comes down to the damper. Either way, im glad to see the development and release of the kit!

IIRC, on the 991.2 GT3RS MR they reduced drag, allowing a few extra degrees of rear wing angle without compromising the drag target. Probably a very similar scenario here.

I want a go. Not much higher up my list for a track day car I don’t need to arse about towing.

I’m sure all the naysayers have a valid point to some degree, but my god what a thing. I’d love to be that fool with his money! smile

Are these flipping at 600k? People want the RS models and to show off. A normal GT3 doesn’t give you the same race boots in a coffee shop cred smile

I’ve got a mate with this kit due and can’t wait to have a go. Wouldn’t be able to spend the money myself though for such small gains with my skill level haha.

The article says 169kg of downforce at 124mph. Anyone know what that might equate to at 70mph? Just wondering if you would notice the aero at a road legal speed as it remains a road legal car.

Having watched the Chris Harris video of the GT2 RS MR, in which he suggested that the suspension was ironing out all of the imperfections on track, I managed to ask an owner if this ability translated to road use effectively as well. He confirmed that it rode significantly better than when it was standard so was a double win as far as he was concerned. UK based too so not just experience of billiard table surfaces. Very expensive suspension components can do wonderful things!

Manthey-Racing are not some random racing team, they are an official Porsche partner and have been majority owned by Porsche for a decade now.

There will be literally zero affect on the value of a car if this kit is added.

And notably the Warranty is unaffected by fitting of the Manthey kits.

Notice the video hadn't been linked anywhere. It's on YouTube here if anyone is feeling particularly bored drinking their coffee!

They're both around £200k (£205k for a GT4 RS, £220k for a 992 GT3). https://finder.porsche.com/gb/en-GB/search

Literally top of the list on the Porsche website - it's almost like the manufacturer has a vested interest in re-selling hard to get cars as soon as they're available. censored

The products Porsche make are wonderful, but their business practices really, really put me off.

I think, as with the entire car industry, the dealers are the biggest cause of problems for the consumer. By all accounts, Porsche are building more and more GT cars with each generation (actually the 718 GT4 has been relatively easy to get hold of if you didn't mind waiting). The biggest issue is the dealers playing games with their customers. Porsche UK have done a few things to try and stop this, but realistically it's still about paying for your place in the list.

As for GT3 v GT4 RS. Personally I'd now take the GT3 having had a 981 GT4 for 4 years, but the price jump is just impossible for me. You're literally looking at double the price to get into anything that is 911 based rather than 981/982 based.
