I'm hunting for an S3 and the cheapest I can find (comparethemarket, confused, etc) is £1.8k with me and my missus as a named driver (£1.5k without her).

Whereas I can find quotes for £1.1k for a Golf R.

How are people getting quotes around the £500 for these two high performance cars? I don't get it? - can someone point me towards a specialist insurer for cars like these???

Anybody getting quotes for £500 is either lying or living on West Uist as the only inhabitant and have an alarmed garage guarded a platoon of penguins with machine guns and have dug a moat around their whole property in which they keep hungry Rottweilers ( with armbands obvs)

Cheers

Job title, area, history. Job title is a good one to “play” with. Some jobs appear to have 3 or 4 subtly different titles that can make a notable difference to quotes in my experience.

When I had my S3 Saloon back in 2016-2019 (from new), I paid no more than £400 a year, as a then 34-37 year old.

Now prices have risen quite sharply this year across the board, but I’d still be expecting £600 or there abouts, going off what my 440i and Model 3 Performance are costing me.

Thanks - been playing around with the details you've both suggested. The price isn't really budging at all. But for some reason the cheapest for the Golf R is now £900. Perhaps my area has had too many insurance claims last year, and these particular car models probably had a lot of claims against as well.

The answer to these questions is always the same…

1) Lying about the insurance price (why? I don’t know)
2) Lying about their circumstances to get a lower price (followed by anger when their insurance claim gets rejected once their lies are uncovered)
3) Insurance pricing is massively subjective and the car crime levels in your area, your personal driving/claim history, occupation, age, NCD etc will all weigh in to it. Sometimes the pricing differences are entirely illogical but certain combinations of the above just send the pricing algorithm crazy and the result is some crazy pricing.

My suggestion would be to call some of the insurers that you don’t see on comparison sites - when I had the defender I was getting stupid quotes (1k+ on a clean license, low crime area and 5k/yr miles). In the end I went with Adrian Flux with a discount code from the defender forums and I think it came in around 380 for the year.

I do think that whilst driving history and address etc. will play a part the simple fact is an S3 is an obvious target for the light fingered of society. Whilst I appreciate the Golf is a similar issue, I suspect an insurer is more nervous about the brand of audi and what it entails versus a VW.

I won't lie either, and sorry to stereotype here, I rarely see S3's driven "sensibly" and no I live in a good area.

Yes it doesnt really matter how you would drive it; I think these 4WD hot hatches are too often bought by people who drive them too fast for the conditions, which inevitably pushes up premiums. Add in variations with regard to location and the general increase in insurance costs this year and four figure premiums aren't really surprising.

The only way you are likely to find a significantly lower premium is if you can find something to significantly differentiate you from the people who push the premiums up and a specialist insurer who will take any notice.

The S3 used to be the thinking middle class persons fast hatch in the first iteration, then, over the years the scratters have caught on and you see them being driven pretty badly, I had one undertake recently at maybe 70/80 mph on a dual carriageway coming up to a busy roundabout, my left indicator on to change into that lane to go around the traffic queuing but he was so committed there was no chance.

So many instagram/TikTok videos (usually labelled "Certi" or similar) have some utter helmet in an S3 aiming it (it isnt driving really is it ?) between lines of traffic at high speed using one hand in a built up area with no regard for anyone else.

And that is why the insurance is high, not so much for those as they dont bother I expect or its some complicated arrangement involving a cousins trade policy, but its high as they then get nicked, sometimes violently, there was a bloke in Didsbury killed when some scrtes nicked his S3 and he tried to stop them.

Found this whilst looking for the above,

https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/great...

Car meets seem to be pretty dangerous, as the aforementioned are out to impress with their "skills" and even if by chance they have some, even professional drivers wouldnt have hundreds of people lining where they would be performing, just in case but people seem to love the underground aspect and bit of danger, until some chimp gets it wrong and mounts the pavement and mashes their legs.

Its endemic, and its sad as its a very decent all rounder.

Maybe, if you can live without the practicality, or just for interest, look at say a TTS, be interesting to see what a quote would be like in comparison as the TTS has the same drivetrain and performance pretty much.

I think all the German performance stuff has been ruined to an extent, so many M140is are now all 500 bhp plus liabilities that seem to be being put into hedges, anything Audi S/RS is a target. Sporty Golfs get targetted, a mate had his patio doors melted to get his GTI, it got found on different plates and had been sold for 24 grand to some poor sod who obviously didnt do enough homework.

Its a shame but would just avoid them if you are near any of the cities and large towns with car crime issues, which is most but some are much worse than others.

That last bit is a very valid point find something else that has similar performance, but avoids the multitude of issues that in particular seem to come with the S3.

I think the M140i is less desireable to the light fingers of society, but it is true they also attract a number of clowns that tune them and then find the local hedgerow/brickwall or something else that stops them quickly.

I also think some of the quicker Golf derivatives are getting worse in general. Even just this weekend a Golf lost control not far from here, 4 up and looks to have misjudged the roundabout. Result, 3 roads closed for a day, and sadly despite 6 fire engines and all the emergency services, one lost their life and three in critical care.

Thanks all for sharing your figures. I've decided that S3 is definitely out of the question - the premium just didn't make sense. So then I started looking for M140i (as I need a practical hot hatch) - and that one is even more dear to insure!!! Not surprised though, it seems to be a boy racers dream car - and the fact that there's so many CAT S and CAT N M140i's for sale just summarises it really. Frustrating.

I've moved on to looking at S4s instead - and guess what, I've managed to find an £800 quote so far. It looks like the fun hot hatches (as much as I want one) are now out the window. Tragic.
