Not sure if anyone else has had this thought....But what do you do on your last known tank of fuel.

Where do you go?
What do you drive?
Do you put your foot to the floor or try and go as far as possible?
Do you go manual or auto?
Do you take passengers?
Do you keep the car after all the fuel has gone?

I hope this day will never come, but with the joyless days of EV seemingly getting closer and closer it's made me day dream.

Hypothetical daydream as that day will never come.

I've already done it. It was just another day and am happy that i never have to do the diesel/petrol refuelling thing again, albeit I have to recharge which for me will be 90% + at home so ultra cheap.

I get as much joy from my i3s as i did with my 205Gti back in the 80s and when I'm at my place in Europe the Taycan is in a different league.

Why will they be joyless? confused

I really cannot fathom why we are (mostly) still driving round in cars powered by burning oil/spirit with big chunks of metal whirling round in oil. It’s absolutely archaic.

Personally I can’t wait. It’s going to be excellent.

I’d keep a V8 in the garage and fire it up once a week, savour the noise for a second or so and then head out in whatever high powered ev I own at the time.

For me, I've driven electric, and I believe there is a place in the market for them. But for me you can't beat the feeling a petrol engine gives you as you drop a gear when you hear some throttle bodies suck in a load of air just as you go enter a twisty bend or tunnel. Electric doesn't give the same feeling.

Good call. But I might just take the V8 round the block sometimes...

I'm sure people said the same about acoustic instruments when synthesisers became affordable, or steam trains when diesels and electrics were coming in. Yet I, far from a ferro-equinologist, love to ride steam trains from time to time, and apart from Kraftwerk I have never had any interest in an all-synth band.

Progress should drive towards efficiency, but people don't necessarily like the most efficient thing. The most efficient food might be some sort of porridgey slop, but I can't see anyone wishing for an end to proper food.

EVs are a necessity to meet the goals we in the developed world have set ourselves, but that doesn't mean we prefer them.

The vast majority of modern music is produced with some degree or other of electronics including the instruments themselves.

I actually prefer the EV I now drive in comparison to the car it replaced. I am also confident that future EVs will way surpass the ICEs they will replace within the next couple of decades or so.

Also you can currently buy synthetic fuel to add to that last tank. I run my mower on synthetic alkylate.

Do you not accept that for most of this forum an EV simply cannot hope to match the enjoyment of wringing out a good internal combustion engine?

I'm going to find a Just Stop Oil protest, reverse up to them, and choke them & spray them with melted rubber by doing a massive burn-out. flames

Once you've choked them you'll have to be quick getting back in your car before they recover and try to citizen arrest you.

And yeah, the last combustion engine to leave me will/would be the motorcycle.

<pedant mode> The last trip would be to the dealer to hand it over and get its replacement electric bike. I'd ride there like I usually ride the bike. If it's a KTM still, then hilariously, if it's a BMW again, then somewhat more sedately. </pedant mode>
