Probably a subject that's been done to death, but this popped up when I looked at the news this morning:

https://news.sky.com/story/most-motorists-want-noi...

Now this sort of thing (as a car lover) worries me as where do you draw the line between a noisy anti-social car and something that sounds 'fruity' (as an old guy described my TVR one day). Thin end of the wedge?

Also having said that, the noise that has increased over the past year or so where I live is incredible. Screaming and popping cars flying down the M11 link road each evening can be deafening and seriously anti-social in the Summer with the windows open or sitting in the garden.

As awful sounding as it can be, I'm not a motorist wanting noise cameras.

Views? smile

I love hearing something nice fly by our back window, however recently it's started sounding like Beirut.

I dont want them, its just another thing in the long list of battle against the motorist. Don't get me wrong, you get the old Fiesta ST and Motorbike that is ridiculously loud, but I dont live near a main road so its not a constant annoyance. Living by a main road and wanting the rest of the country to conform is like moving next to a race track or airfield and campaigning to have it closed down due to noise (in my opinion anyways). It would be a sad day if the odd flat 6 howl or v8 rumble is gone because of a few Nimby's angry at the Pop & crack maps

MANIACS!

That seems to be the current view of anyone driving and not speeding, driving and speeding, anything aftermarket, pops and bangs and overtaking.

As long as the actual noise level they trigger at is sensible (so it doesn't pick up sensibly-driven unmodified cars) I'd have no problem with them being rolled out across residential areas. I like nice-sounding cars as much as the next PHer, but nice-sounding doesn't have to (and IMO on the road shouldn't) equal ridiculously loud.

I live a stone’s throw from Santa Pod, which has been around for over 50 years.

The increase in residents complaining about noisy and “anti-social” cars has been dramatic over the last 12-18 months.

I don’t want more cameras and more big brother style legislation, but I have to say that some owners do not help by driving like dicks when they’ve left the venue and not respecting the surrounding area.

Some motorcycles seem incredibly loud and their owners seem to take a delight in driving round residential streets on summer nights waking everyone up.

If new measures are brought in it will be because of the Tw*ts ruining it for everyone else.

yes That's the thing with most "anti-motorist" campaigns. IMO we shouldn't be blaming the people campaigning for change, we should be blaming the idiot motorists who give them ammunition.

As a libertarian I think people should generally be allowed to do what they want, as long as they are not negatively impacting other people. Loud cars and bikes generally fall down on that second point. So as much as I personally do like the sound of engines, noise should be restricted, as most people don’t.

Why not start with banning the "pops and bangs" tune? There's no reason for them apart from to make noise. If you want people to look at you while making a noise, just scream into a bucket. That's how cool it is.

And who is paying for the camera?

I already know.. no shock! It would be us!

No thanks!

I do think though that pops & bangs maps should carry a prison sentence.

But if we are all having to go electric as per the gov desire it won’t be a problem soon anyway?

Just like how new cars have speed limiters but they still install permanent average speed cameras at great expense to the tax payer which will be relatively redundant in ten years?

There's someone around here with a Harley-style bike which is so obnoxiously loud it drowns out the TV when he goes past, scares the cat and you can actually feel it reverberating off the buildings. To say nothing of the pop and bang brigade, which is made even worse by the fact they installed speed bumps on the main road near me. If it stops dheads like that, then I'm all for them.

The issue is that by putting one camera up in an area it doesn't stop people putting loud exhausts on their car/bike, they'll learn where the camera is and drive quietly past it. The houses down the road then will get pissed off when everyone is speeding up away from the camera, so there will be pressure to put up more cameras, and repeat.

Same as the fact that "everyone" wants a 20mph limit outside their house but wants to drive at 40mph past everyone else's because it's "too slow" to drive at 20mph. The net effect will be 20mph everywhere and noise cameras everywhere.

We have one locally after complaints about all the supercars going past showing off for the assembled car spotters.

I have forgotten its there and gone haring past it on a few occasions, my car is by no means quiet but no letter or anything as yet, so it must be a pretty high sound level to trigger it, think its like 110 Decibels.

Not against it if it cuts down on the ear splitting, truly obnoxious things you sometimes hear, seems its been set pretty reasonably.

On the way home from work, there's a numpty driving an Astra VXR and every time he goes past me, he likes to put his car into shotgun mode. The cars a mess and it sounds crap.

But how many other people have to be negatively impacted for freedoms to be restricted? 1, 100, 100000?

At the moment, it seems like you only have to have a single complaint for the other 1000 liberal views to be ignored.

As a librarian, I am used to telling everyone to be quiet and I would love that to extend to our roads.

Tough one this. I love the sound of a nice 6 or 8 cylinder engine pottering around or at full chat, I have one but make sure I use it quietly in town and if I'm leaving / coming home early or late but understand it's not for everyone. I hate the loud 4 pot pops and bangs mapped sound but realise others do.

Is this just another government / local authority way to take more money from our pockets in fines? Will the limits slowly be lowered until you will only be allowed to drive an electric car around without being fined? As soon as they realise the amount of fines issued won't pay for the equipment installed the limit will change.

Don't worry I have my tinfoil hat on standby.
