BMW 630i (E63) | PH Private Area

A classic two-door, with a manual and a straight six, for less than £6k? The bargains are still out there...

It doesn’t feel like a great time to be a BMW fan. The current generation of M cars is better than ever, but also really expensive. Even the M Performance 240i, great though it is, remains the best part of £50k. So much of what previews the future looks more than a little strange, too. And all the while the classics, the cars that made us love BMW in the first place, are getting more and more valuable. Car companies must adapt and change to survive, yes, though it seems that no maker is going through quite such a drastic transformation as Bee-Em.

Not all hope is lost, however. Because while the original shark nose 6 Series remain eye-wateringly pricey - we’ll let you find the £115k example yourself - there are still affordable, attainable, desirable examples of the second-gen, E63 6 Series out there. Now, sure, they’re not directly comparable (not least thanks to so much time between them), and it seems unlikely the later car will ever have the iconic rep of the first, but like so many of the Bangle designs the second Six now seems to be coming into its own.

It'll never meet with the same universal love (and some lightheadedness) as an E24, but for a car that once left folk so aghast this 6 Series is ageing nicely. It still looks contemporary, which is no mean feat for a big coupe that launched 20 years ago. The proportions are right, the grilles are correctly sized - even the rear end that came in for such derision looks quite cool. Or perhaps BMW fans (us included) are just desperate to see the good in any old, rear-drive, vaguely affordable two-door with the blue-and-white roundel on it.

Most 6 Series of this era are V8 or V10 powered, it seems, the brawnier 650i and M6 models arguably more befitting of a car that was BMW’s flagship coupe at the time. The 635d that came a few years after launch was popular, too. This is powered by none of those engines, however, as it’s a 630i. Down on power compared to the rest, sure (and not that much cheaper in period, either), but this is BMW’s N52 3.0-litre straight six, so the sound is going to be great. And it’s known as a pretty sturdy old motor, here with just 90k miles on it and the major jobs - water pump, thermostat, PCV/CCV - all sorted.

Adding to the rarity of this 6 Series is its six-speed manual gearbox. Yes, really - can’t be many spindly BMW gearlevers out there next to that original iDrive twirler, but there’s one here. It’ll mean both proper engagement with a much loved BMW straight six, plus none of the frustration that comes with an old auto, whether that’s driving them or fixing them.

Now, of course, this is now an 18-year-old BMW, it’s not going to be perfect. On the other hand, this must be least bork-prone powertrain of the entire 6 Series lineup, and there’s plenty to be encouraged by in the advert, too. Both interior and exterior, even the engine bay actually, look fantastic; it’s seldom that the more affordable old BMWs out there are presented this well. It has an MOT until October (with only a couple of advisories last time around), there are 15 stamps in the book, it’s from before the more expensive tax brackets and, handily, it’s ULEZ compliant as well. A manual 630i would probably be one of the rarest cars in the capital…

Oh yeah, and it’s five grand. Alright, £5,850 to be precise, but really not a lot of money at all when values for everything still seem so berserk. Indeed, for a BMW that looks this good, should sound great and comes with the added appeal of a manual gearbox, the courageous might even deem it a bargain. And when was the last time you heard that in the same breath as ‘BMW’?

Any excuse to post a photo of mine. Had one for about 2 years and sold it to we buy any car for a few grand. Saw it at an auction and it’s back on the road with a new MOT.

Really enjoyed it and would like the engine in a smaller car such as the z4 coupe. Ran it alongside my 640i for awhile but walked pass it every day for months and it started to get covered in moss so moved it on

Only problems I had were fogged up lights. Resolved with a hair dryer down the back of the light unit and the leaking oil cooler seal.

I also had my first ever crash in this. Put my foot down going around a round about, gave me a tank slapper and turned 180 , mounted a pavement on the exit and dumped it in a hedge. I had to reverse out, facing the wrong way and required an multi point turn to get the car facing the way I intended to go coming off the roundabout. Slippery road and a boot full of food shopping was my excuse.

I think these look great now. The shape has matured nicely… they don’t look as bloated and fussy as they used to either, next to modern options.

Good photography goes a long way, and I love those wheels.

I used to think Bangle designs were horrible back when they were released, but they’ve aged incredibly well. I’m not sure if that’s the design on it’s own or because everything else has got so much uglier!

There are a tiny number of v8 manual 6 series knocking about, I know because I nearly bought one, I was put off by an oil leak that the dealer ‘hadn’t noticed’ but at the time I didn’t realise what I rare car I was looking at. Genuinely nice to sit in and arguably more space in the back than a 911, which was one of the attractions.

Like most I was not impressed back in 2004 (I was also just a child at 17) when this was launched, but 15 years later the design had matured enough (or maybe I had?) for me buy one. They are a great looking thing in reality, but I would agree that these wheels are not going it many favours.

Whilst the 630i with a manual box sounds great, there are some V8s out there with the same box and I think some manual converted M6s now too.

Great value cars still very much focused on the driver. Someone will enjoy this one.

Agree - looks like a bargain, and they have aged really well.
I'd definitely give that a punt.

If I hadn’t just put Bilstein B6’s on my Z4, I’d be interested in this. Looks great.

BMW’s from this time got some stick for build quality, having been underneath my 2004 Z4 I’d say the interior plastics are crap, but where it matters underneath it’s really nicely made, much better than my E34 was. I changed the cam cover gaskets and it looked almost new under there. The chassis is very robust and corrosion free, and it’s telling when the fasteners on a 19 year old daily can be undone relatively easily. My Ford was questionable at 7 years old.

I bought a 635D (as quick as the V8 day to day they say...) but I was underwhelmed. I was sent out on Xmas Eve to do the food shopping and came back with a 650i - much better! Alpina alloys (pain to inflate the tyres) and cream interior, looked and sounded great. However sold it for a 911 and have kept that for 7 years now...

If you have the itch, V8 with an auto box would be miles better. 3.0 would struggle.

It’s not until you see it on the drive next to the Pug that you realise how bloody massive it is!

I do like it but if it weren’t for the wheels and the black paint I don’t think I’d give it a second glance

Beautiful engine but I can’t help thinking something that size needs a V8.
Pre 2006 should help with car tax I’d guess. They’re aging very well. I can’t imagine the current range looking as good 15-20 years from now.

Had a 630i. Lacklustre engine. Water pumps fail and are electric so no coolant whatsoever when they do. The only car to leave me stranded in the last 15 years. Comfortable car that still looks good with plenty of room in the back.

So do I, but being in my 50s I doubt I'll live long enough to see it. The grandkids probably won't either.

630i is surprisingly light, under 1.5t, almost the same weight as the e92 330i
6.5sec to 60mp/h is decent.

I had a 330 auto estate with the N52 and it was lovely… but if they’d done a V8…
Six series I’d go V8 while they’re still allowed.

I need a daily that is decently economical, that's why I don't want V8, 630i auto would be my choice, without sunroof, with a sports seats and r18 wheels in the same size. (245/45/18)
I don't like heavy cars, V8 is a porker.

I was surprised when I found that out too. My E90 330i auto weighed 1550kg for example. The next generation 6 series was heavy though, and the F13 640d I had was just over 1800kg.
