Why in gods name aren’t dealers capable of fitting number plates straight?

I don’t go out a lot but when I do, the amount of newish cars with dealer fitted plates fitted on the piss is quite considerable.

Unbelievable isn't it? The number of incredibly expensive cars you see with comedy dealer fit plates, I saw a Tesla Model X with all the bells yesterday and front and rear plates were shocking. Just spend 2 minutes on the effort, or even just make a jig with some pieces of wood ffs.

It also staggers me that in this day and age the "preferred" method still seems to so often be "whack it on with a couple of self tappers". Even worse when it's a few years old and you remove the plate to find a collections of badly aligned holes from previous plates.

One that irritates me is when people screw 4 screws into the number plate on the back of a Mercedes instead of using the proper holder. I saw a Mercedes Maybach S600 for sale on collecting cars with that rather than the proper holder!

I think the days of the holder are numbered, especially now you can get plates with the extra piece at the bottom for the dealer details etc.

I wouldnt take delivery until they sorted it, its nothing but its everything if a dealership think that a car going out with a plate on skewy is ok, it usually has their name all over it, and it reflects badly. I can do them at home better than dealers.

Parks Volvo Ayr screwed the rear plate onto my then new V50 in 2009 on with woodscrews rather than use the correct mounting points. After a few years yes rust started appearing from below the plate and of course Volvo would not cover it under the anti corrosion warranty which was correct.

There were even lugs for the plate to be screwed to but no Park's technicians were too dumb or DNGAF.

Of course you wouldn't notice til it's too late.

Arnold Clark I'm sure have a feature of squinty no plates

I bought a mangy old SLK with four silver self tappers holding the plate on, which I thought was awful so I bought a new plate. Turns out the MB rear plinth was made with proper holes for exactly that sort of fitting, I assume they envisioned using those coloured caps but it seemed pretty grotty to me.

3M red tape is the proper way.

Any form of screw looks terrible. I use the thick double-sided foam pads from Halfords; apply correctly and the plate is going nowhere. Plates always look cleaner without holes being drilled through them.

I also don't like number plates with dealer advertising; my car is not a mobile billboard for their business.

Mine are basically straight but I'd say there's nearly 2cm between the relative heights of the screws.

I hate the fact they've just screwed the plate through the boot lid on my car.

I 'joked' about with the salesman who sold us the last new car we had.

When we collected the car he proudly pointed out the "straight" rear plate. I'm still not sure if he was joking back. I suggested a visit to Specsavers would be in order.

On our daughters SEAT Ateca, there are holes factory built into the rear tailgate with threaded inserts. The fitter had scribed a centre line on the back of the number plate, cutting right through the yellow background and the numbers (which technically makes them illegal as the regs say the characters should be unbroken). He'd then drilled the holes either side of the line for each hole - so the plate is a hole diameter out of level.

It really doesn’t matter. No doubt everyone will have tedious, memorable cherished plates fitted afterwards anyway, so save your energy for things that are really worth it. Like hysterical overreactions on a motoring forum that nobody reads.

Went to put my private plate on my new car and found this when taking the old one off.

My plate is only 6 digits with no coloured flash so doesn't cover the holes when stuck on banghead

99% of plates here in DE are in number plate holders.

Why is that so difficult for the UK to adopt?
