For once I actually read the sign at the entrance to a car park I use, and it got me thinking.

Even a humble Nissan Leaf is 1580kgs. What are we going to do in 2030? Or even today if you already own one?

This surprises me. I was towing one behind a 2.0-litre Mondeo recently. Barely felt like I was towing anything; I had to keep checking the mirror to make sure it was still there!

Park in one of the countless car parks without that restriction I imagine.

Even the Base Kia Sportage weighs 1526kg. Whilst a 500e is 1365kg.

So it's more a small cars only.

The mention of 'unladen weight' rather than kerb weight suggests to me that it is intended to exclude vans and commercial vehicles.

It probably was originally designed for that, but as modern cars are getting heavier and heavier, this does exclude a lot ot both IC and EV vehicles.
Also it does kind of assume that the average driver is aware of the weight of their vehicle.
Which I'm pretty certain they have no idea of or interest.

Actually, I’ll think you’ll find it’s modern ICE cars which would struggle, as it’s ‘unladen weight’ and not ‘kerb weight’. As alluded to, it’s designed to stop big commercial vehicles parking there.

A contributor in this recent thread brought to the forum’s attention car parks in the West Country with restrictions above 1500kgs GVW.

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Which remains absolutely mental to me. I suspect unenforceable and unenforced, too, but that’s hardly the correct attitude.

That's interesting, but not something widely provided by EV manufacturers.

It isn’t that’s true, but take the known weights of the Model 3 LR (1844kg) and the known weight of the battery (480kg), and you have quite a low unladen weight of 1364kg.

Yep. But I don't think that's in the owners manual!

As above. How many people actually know how much their car weighs?

I’m using a Discovery 5 at the moment, I don’t know how much it weighs, I’m guessing approaching 2 tonnes. I suppose the information will be on a plate somewhere, but how many folks are even going to know that?

Given what’s in the news I’m guessing that car park is on a school roof?

Don't they tend to be really heavy due to the batteries spin

Lol yes but a huge number of the ICE vehicles on sale would break 1.5 tonnes

^ Not really, just pointing out that the local authority has unwittingly become anti-EV.
Or so I thought, until I read (above) that the unladen weight of an EV doesn't include the batteries - that's news to me. Seems odd that the battery is considered "load" because without that "load" the car won't move.
