My niece just passed her test, basically cannot get insured
she is 17
she has a 1.2 2007 fiesta, we live in a village on the coast, £4k+ with a parent as named driver

tried the cheapest car on insurance i can think of when searching VW fox it still comes out at 3500

3000miles a year. with black box..

any suggestions on cars (happy to change to another cheap car) or companies for insurance

marmalade want 2000 deposit for 1000 miles then 200 for every 250 miles after that!

help please

how are young people supposed to afford this/ then learn to actually drive

With bills like that how are they every going to save money to live or move out
I feel sorry for my daughter turning 17 next year desperate to drive next

Try something that no young person would buy. Might not work, but how about car typically bought by the safest drivers? Something like a Rover 75 or similar. Insurance data might make them less costly to insure.

Whether the young person in question could be persuaded is another matter!

Seems expensive. Last year Churchill insured my daughter for £1250 on her 21reg polo without a black box. At 17 when she passed her test

This year she using ticker with black box for £897. Nobody would touch her without black box for less than £1700 with a years driving experience

Insurance never makes sense

Try something that a 17 year old girl generally wouldn't have, the whole fiesta, corsa small hatchback etc etc the insurance stats on those will be high. The cheaper quotes will be on cars more left field, maybe a small volvo, yaris maybe those sort of cars

Let's face it a lot of us smashed our cars up when we were young so until you get one decent crash out of your system you could be a big risk.

that seems very expensive

nippers was £800 for a Panda 4 years ago
Daughter £550 just over 2 years ago for Fiat 500

Isle of Wight so I would say similar in terms of risk

mate just did Panda 100hp this year for his nipper £880 with box I think

Both parents need to be named drivers on the policy

Try setting the insurance to start 3-4 weeks in advance. Do things such getting quotes on a weekday evening rather than at 3 in the morning. Insurers tweak their algorithms all the time and behavioural patterns can play a part in that algorithm. I couldn't say how much though. Basically you want to appear as conventional, organised and steady as possible and dare I say it, boring because boring means lower risk.

Why are people comparing costs to 2 or more years ago?

It's obvious car insurance has, for some reason, gone galactic in the last few months.

Although she has not passed yet, we are getting quotes of £1200 for a black boxed with cameras for a 17 year old on a 2009 1.4 polo petrol

After 6 months I’m buying her something else and we are getting similar quotes on newer Vauxhall Adams, Corsas, Polos and Seats and maybe an Alfa Mito.. Obviously she wanted an Audi A1 but we saw almost £3000 for a small petrol. 1.0 and 1.2 seems ti be the sweet spot . Car will be registered in North Somerset postcode

Currently using Marmalade to insure her whilst she is learning.

Try something that isn’t an obvious choice for a first car. I started with an Audi A2 TDI (which is so good I still have it several years later). Someone I know has had good results on an Alfa Romeo Mito and Mitsubishi Colt in the last few months.

Indeed it has but I think car insurance has seen the biggest leap?

Have you tried running quote with further driver qualifications? It might be worth her doing pass plus or joining the IAM or something to bring the premium down.

It's probably the car, but maybe your piost code too. My daughter, last year, 17, on a fiat 500 1.2, was £650, with a black box. One year in, with no black box, it is now £600.

Not for everybody. I'm paying less than 2 years ago for a 2009 SLK350. Fiat Panda 1.2 went up 5%.
