I’ve just bought a private plate from a private seller. I’ve received the retention certificate (green paper), it’s valid for 10 years. This is in the sellers name.

I want to keep it on retention until next year as that’s when I’m changing my car.

Do I need change ownership of the plate/cert so it’s in my name right away? Or can I use as is when the time comes for me to transfer onto a car?

Apologies, first time owning a private plate so not sure on how it works.

Thanks.

You can leave it in the sellers name and can assign it onto one of your cars within 10 years. I don't think you will be able to renew the certificate after 10 years though

The only downside to this is that if the seller is unscrupulous then they could still assign it to another car if they kept the certificate number.

If it is a very expensive plate then for the sake of £80 or so just stick it on your car now and then switch over to your desired car in a years time.

Anyone only needs the certificate no to assign it to their vehicle so whilst it's in someone else's name you are vulnerable.
I've always asked for the retention certificate asap and then get it on a car.
The last no I bought the vendor sent the certificate to the DVLA. This came back in his name but to my address and, most crucially, with a different certificate no to the one he sent out. So it was safe to keep.

It's "free" to transfer from a retention cert to your car. It will cost £80 to remove and put on retention next time. Then will not cost to put on the other car.
