I have annual breakdown cover for myself, wife & son, which expires shortly. Currently with RAC & intending to change to a different company.
A while back there was a thread running on PH regarding a breakdown provider & virtually every response was positive. I think it had a low cost to join & would then add a charge if you used their services. Can anyone tell me the provider, please, or any other recommendations.
Thanks

I can't help with your specific enquiry, but I presume your issue with the RAC is...... "How Much!"....

Assuming you don't get an answer to your specific question, try something like Topcashback just to see how much you are being ripped off! https://www.topcashback.co.uk/category/breakdown-c...

If you wanted to, you could contact RAC and ask them if they would like to price match.

Unfortunately the breakdown cover industry is very much based on customers not being arsed to try and get a better deal EVERY renewal time.

Or you could put breakdown cover on your car or house insurance.

I normally switch between RAC and AA taking topcashback to half their stupid renewal quotes. Downside is you have to stump up full rate up front and wait a 1-3 months to get the cashback.

I'm just doing car ins renewal and best quote (of someone I have heard of) is Aviva and there is an option to add RAC breakdown for £15 for the year. I need to check the details as no doubt its super basic and probably no home cover.

Just be aware of the cheap/free breakdown add ons to motor policies. I have "free" breakdown cover with a policy with Tesco, but the recovery limit is a maximum of 10 miles or to the nearest garage.

We are with green flag. One of our vehicles had a breakdown on the motorway a couple of weeks ago at 16:30 at 21:00 still no definite eta.

In the end highways agency got it recovered as we had to get it off the motorway at an overall cost of £420.00
I am hoping to claim this back off green flag as not fit for purpose.

Autoaid is possibly who you are thinking about. We have been with them for many years and cant fault them.
They cover me, wife, 2 normal cars, van, classic car and a motorbike all for £ 78.54 this year. £14.90 of that is "Older Vehicle premium" so if you don't have an "older vehicle" you should get it for less.

I've been with Autoaid too for the last few years. Had to use them once in that time and they were excellent. For around £68 it covers both me and my partner.

Thanks for responses. Yes, I think it was Autoaid.
I often swap companies, try to get a better deal from existing etc, but had a bad experience with RAC & decided to change provider when time to renew, which is imminent.
Will check out Autoaid.

StartRescue, is the one we are with. £47 total for two cars per year, and £30 a call-out.

I think the OP is referring to Start Rescue. Was a thread recently where several posters, me included, shared their positive experiences. About half the price of AA for me, and better service on the one occasion I have had to use Start so far.

I also switched to AutoAid off the back of a few recommendations on here. I'd been with the AA for years, as in 15yrs+ and it just kept getting dearer and dearer and at renewal they wanted £275.00 (ish) from me and weren't the slightest bit interested when I called to question how it was so much from a fairly basic package. They still keep sending me dross asking if I'd like to come back. From memory I bay about £75 a year now including the old banger premium but touch wood, yet to put it to the test.

I've been with Britannia Rescue for over 30 years. £70 per year for personal cover for both Mrs. D.R. and me.

When my Range Rover "failed to proceed" in Ireland last year they got us back home in 21 hours using the ferry and four different breakdown trucks - it was like a military operation and turned what could have been an absolute nightmare into a relatively relaxed experience.

My cover is provided by GEM, it covers whatever car I happen to be driving at point of service requirement. As I drive pre war cars as well as moderns it provides exactly what I need. Not cheap though.

I think it’s a bit luck of the draw. Having been with the AA for 10 plus years and never using them, I had my first breakdown. It took them 12 hours to get to the car and this included them point blank lying about my cover and refusing me onward travel, refusing to take the car to a garage of my choice or providing a hire car, despite me having the full package. I won’t go into the full saga, but I left them.

Same car broke down a month later and green flag got to me in under 20 mins. Turned out I had broken down pretty much outside the guys house at the exact time he started work. Don’t think I will ever get that level of service again.

Funnily enough runs out this week, going to investigate this company being recommended on here

My RAC renewal just came up at £260 a year, been with them since 1992 and I haven't called them in 5 years. They have no interest in price matching or giving me a better deal so finally am out!! Really just laziness on my part that I didnt do something about this sooner...

I guess I can probably get similar cover from Britannia for a quarter of that but am about to go shopping and find out....
