Hi,

Just had my van MOT'd. New garage for me, not used them before.

Failed on a few things. It's an old van, VW T4.

First was a Bottom Ball Joint. I thought that strange as it was replaced 2 and 15k miles years ago. Any how, I guess these can wear out. Fair enough.

It also failed on a "Nearside Front Outer Drive Shaft Joint Constant Velocity Joint boot severely deteriorated"

I took a look underneath and well I'm no expert but it looks fine to me. Assuming I'm looking at the correct thing. I was expecting to see it split or something.

Couple of photos attached. Am I being taken for a mug here or am I missing something.

Thanks

I am guessing they failed it as "rumbling" on a full steering lock was noticed and all will appear to be visually Ok

Thanks, but I think it's just the boot they are saying is defective.

From the certificate: Nearside Front Outer Drive shaft joint constant velocity boot severely deteriorated (6.1.7 (g) (i))

Cheers

Have you tried opening up the pleats in the boot? Sometimes they can be split but the split closes up and isn't visible until you pry it apart.

Got to be honest though I'd have expected to see CV grease splattered around by now if there was anything, have you tried checking the other side in case it was a typo?

There was no grease anywhere, I just cleaned it up with a rag to get the dust off and be sure.. Had a good feel round but couldn't find any splits.

Other side is fine too. Inners are fine too.

6.1.7 (g) (1) is only a minor defect so not a fail, it must be just looking a bit deteriorated.

I’m not an MOT tester but I’ve worked in the car repair business all my life. By the look of those images I can’t see why it should fail.?? If there was a hole with grease leaking out, yes it should.
Give the boot a good clean up with tyre dresser and re MOT it.

Welcome.

Why are the nuts just above the boot wet?

They look fine to me, if you've rotated them round and can't find any splits at all, I'd ask them to put it on the ramp and show you what it is they're seeing that you're not.

As soon as a boot gets holed it’s finished. The speed it rotates from one angle to another, it will split wide open with grease everywhere.

I sprayed the surrounding bolts with pentrating spray in case I / or the garage was going to undo them.

It hasn't failed, its a minor defect, just like an advisory.
