'famous last words' - i.e. it's the thing someone who thinks they're clever says just before something bad happens to them.

I was driving down to London with my wife and family in the car on some twisty A-road and I said "it's pretty hard to get caught for speeding around here"

Obviously, having said that there was then a police officer with a speed gun pointing at my car at the moment the road opened up and I 'got caught for speeding'. Famous last words.

Luke.

My pal,

I know this road like the back of my hand just after I said we should maybe slow down.

Luckily the ditch wasn't that deep.

I knew a guy once who said "look, precision steering" with one palm on the front of the steering wheel to just wipe it around as he was turning in the street.

Hit a bollard.

When I owned my 300ZX which had an engine bay so cramped you couldn't fit a hand in anywhere and some questionable history from Japan in regards to the wiring, my girlfriend.....

"You're car hasn't been in the garage for ages....."

Every. Damn. Time. Last time she did, it went straight back for the thing it last had wrong the last time she said that :rolf:

She's now banned from saying this or ever commenting on any of my cars reliability within ear shot of one of them rofl

Bloke I worked with pontificating about ABS and how he would remove the fuse as he could candence brake, just at that moment a tractor and trailer pulled out and he didnt see it, I shouted and he resumed driving and hammered on the brakes, wherby the ABS pulled him out of the st as real incidents dont pan out like he was rattling on about things.

I did say to a young colleague when I was driving to see a car with him that the main rule of driving was not to hit anything, just before I hit something biggrin

Reminds me of the time when I was first driving and I had a girl in the car who I thought would be my girlfriend and she said: "how do you not hit anything" when driving down country lanes. Almost exactly the moment she said it I clipped door mirrors with a BMW 5 series which was coming in the opposite direction. I pretended nothing had happened. i.e. styled it out

On a snow covered road.....

Me (passenger): "steady Tim, it's a a bit sketchy"
Tim (driver): "trust me, I know what I'm doing"

...... said just before losing it on the corner and crashing through a stone wall.

Lad in 6th form used to give me and a mate a lift to and from school as all lived close together. I was about 14/15 at the time.

This guy was so overconfident, used to drive his dad's old Toyota Corolla hatchback and always drive excessively fast at certain places. But the best journey we had was when it had snowed quite heavily and being the driving god he thought he was, he took various side roads with the most snow. All the while telling us how to drive in snow, turn into a slide etc. etc.

Took one side road too many, decided to weave slightly and the back end of the car came round. His natural reaction was to just brake and hold on whilst the car did a 180 and the tail end hit the only car on the entire road!

He sheepishly got out of the car to go and tell the owner, the door shut and me and my mate couldn't stop laughing. We'd have felt sorry for him if it wasn't for all his boasting!

I just remembered my best egg on face car related one.

I entered the Clio cup challenge in the early 2000s, and managed to progress to the fourth round. I got on really well with the guy doing the sit in assessment, and we were talking about the Clio we were in, the stand out comment being that I liked front wheel drive cars as you could always recover them if they started to throw shapes mid bend.

My turn out on track, hugely ambitious entry speed to a left hander followed immediately by a right, as I eased off to turn in for the right, the back end broke away onto full opposite lock. Despite the approved application of full throttle, it continued in a smokey spiral. To his eternal credit, the assessor laughed as much as I did, both at the speed of the off, and the conversation we had just had. Fortunately, you had a few laps to get your st together, and I got my bks in order eventually.

Unbelievably, I was granted a place for round 5.

Oh yeah, and my comment " What's the worst that could happen? " to a guy I was working with when I was practicing my left foot braking in the company van on some quiet lanes near Winchester on the way in to work. Ended up reversing out of a hedge. Happy days.

Not quite the same but as a 16 year old in around 2000, I was a passenger in a Fiat Panda 4x4 being driven very spiritedly by a friend, until he lost it and crashed sideways into a sign that said "Narrow Road, please drive carefully".

Nothing injured apart from the pride of the driver and the side of the Panda, but it came out of the ditch OK and we pootled home at a more sedate pace. Still no idea how he managed to get the speed up to lose the back-end of a Panda 4x4, but the irony was not lost on any of us

Voldemort said:

'Merde mon pieds c'est chaud' - Joan of Arc.

I think I've said words to the effect of 'Ah don't worry I'll be fine' shortly before every DIY-based injury I've ever got, up to and including almost severing a fingers with an angle grinder and shooting myself in the foot with a nail gun (in separate incidents - I'm not that bad).

Driving wise I once tried to persuade a friend that the weather (v. heavy snow on the North York Moors), really was a bit too bad for him to be driving home in and he may as well stay overnight until the snowplough had been out in the morning. Off he went though - 'It'll be alright I've got winter tyres'. Less than half an hour later he walks back in looking like Ernest Shackleton having driven straight off the road into a ditch less than a mile away.

Do you think that with all these service vehicles close to planes on the floor if they ever bump into one?

(Cue 9hr wait to continue our flight while our plane was repaired).

And of course, the classic 'Hold my beer, watch this...'
