Best of British

So after a lovely few days on the Isle of Man for the IOM motor festival, which this year was classic America themed and was full of interesting stuff, they have released next years theme of ‘Best of British’, which got me thinking what would I take?

The event includes some static displays on the sea fronts at a couple different harbours and some road runs on some closed sections including the mountain section of the TT corse, so something that looks cool but also maybe has a decent turn of speed?

Iv always been a TVR fanboy and would love a Sagaris or Griff 500. Still look great today, fairly rare and attract attention but can hold its own when pushing on.

Maybe take a more relaxed pace and take in the scenery with an E type or Austin Healy, probably a delight to potter around the harbours in but small and light for the tighter back roads.

Or take full advantage of the closed roads and no speed limits and take something modern like a McLaren 765lt?

Not to mention the range of Astons, maybe on old V8 , V12 vantage, DBS would make a good all rounder.

So what would you take?

I'd be taking a Morgan I think - although I am a little biased.

A Griffith would be tempting or to take advantage of the lack of speed limits, maybe a Noble M12 GTO 3...

I love the Sagaris, E-Type and Healey suggestions, but I'd take a later Healey 3000.

Or maybe a DB5, better still a V8 Vantage.

Later Astons and McLarens just don't do anything for me (I struggle to tell which is which TBH) - maybe because I'm getting on a bit.

But a McLaren F1 or a GMA T33 would be fantastic!

Noble for me please.

That Marcos looks like it's just finished special school and E Types will be worth 50 pence once my dad's generation dies off because nobody under 75 gives a stuff about them. I can't imagine anyone in their 40s today ever wanting something so slow and ugly for such a ridiculous price tag.

That truly is a ridiculous price for that E-Type. According to the advert, it’s an ex USA LHD car, exported back to the UK and converted to RHD and restored in the 1990s by XK Engineering. It has since had a few Eagle upgrades along the way, but that’s it.

Joe Macari has a similar one in, fresh out of restoration for £133k.

As someone from Worcestershire and a former-Plus 8 owner, not if the OP wanted to enjoy doing any driving on their holiday. My Plus 8 on bumpy roads was enough for me to get rid of mine, my Mrs still recalls that car with venom and it was almost 40 years ago now

I borrowed my mate’s 1991 pre-cat 3.9 +8 for a weekend in the 1990s. It remains the most truculent car I have ever driven, but when he drives it (he still has it), it’s as smooth as silk. Having said that, he’s been a Morgan owner continuously since the 1960s, so I guess you get used to their idiosyncrasies.

I realise that I’m going to get lynched on here for this… but why oh why does everyone spaff their pants about the E Type? They just look very odd to me, mainly because of the wheels and the way that they’re so far into the bodywork. They just look like an old Commer van to me…
