Audi RS3 Sportback (8P) | PH Fleet

Remember how Ben didn't like his TT RS enough to keep it for very long? Well, guess what he's bought now...

Man maths is the best, isn’t it? Well, best for what’s sat on the driveway, bank balance aside. I sold my Megane all the way back in February, and with ‘my’ mighty Dacia Duster long-termer to tide me over for six months, I had plenty of time to find a replacement to run alongside my Clio 172 Cup.

The only reason the Megane went was my desperate need for five doors with a growing family and I spent countless hours, if not days, searching for a replacement. Then again, what else is PH for? Good thing I can’t get in trouble for browsing the classifieds while I’m at ‘work’.

Despite having previously written off the idea of buying a Mk5 Golf GTI, our modified PH Project Car inspired me to look at the same drivetrain in Audi A3 format. I do like owning something a little different. But then for just a bit more I could get into an S3. And then a little more than that would get me into an RS3. You can see what happened.

After talking myself into spending more than I’d originally planned, I did consider a Mk8 Fiesta ST and a facelift M135i, but ultimately it was the stunning (in my eyes) example you see here that I couldn’t resist. Matt B had done his best to convince me that the M135i was the way to go, so I did at least test drive both - but my history with fast and dull Audis was too storied to ignore. And I promise this is the least dull one yet.

After all, it isn’t just an S3 with an extra cylinder and a body kit. When Audi charged quattro GmbH with building a limited-run halo model, it fired the starting pistol on the super-hatch era. The return of the iconic turbocharged five-cylinder engine - and its transverse configuration - in the TT RS meant it was only a matter of time before Ingolstadt launched an A3 with 335hp, a seven-speed S-tronic ‘box, all-wheel drive and no direct rivals.

Given what we’ve experienced since 2011, the impression it made at the time has softened in retrospect - but the RS3 was initially greeted with astonishment. It helped that the new model had the look to underpin that enormous output figure with larger air intakes, flared carbon-fibre reinforced polymer front wings, a wider track for the suspension and four-pot Brembo brake calipers with two-piece discs behind those oversized five-spoke wheels. It didn’t necessarily make everyone tingle with the way it changed direction, but it was massively fast and very good looking and that tends to be enough.

It was enough for me anyway. Like a lot of people at the time, the RS3 ticks an awful lot of boxes - and frankly, when you’re coming from a Megane 275 Cup-S, you know any hatchback is going to feel like second best on the handling front. Already the car has proved a fantastic daily: fun enough when I want it to be, reserved and understated when I don’t. It’s no surprise that Audi sold out the first UK allocation of 500 cars and had to make another 250 to satisfy demand. Another two generations, multiple facelifts and numerous rivals spawned later, it’s safe to say the firm was onto something.

My Daytona Grey example popped up after being with the same owner for the past nine years, and kept in fantastic condition with low miles, a comprehensive main dealer and specialist history and well below average miles. It’s no surprise that banger of a five-pot is the standout feature. I like it so much I haven’t once stumbled upon the understeer that everyone moans about. Must try harder.

This year bought the 2013 Audi RSQ3 and know how much fun the car is. Think you have a gem. These cars are wolves in sheep’s clothing and are brilliant drivers.

I fancied an 8V RS3 saloon to replace my 8V S3 saloon, but when the time came it didn’t feel like enough of an upgrade, especially given the S3 was mine from new, specced how I wanted it, and the RS3 would have had to be compromised in spec to find one in budget. 440i convertible bought instead.

Ultimately never went ahead with it, not sure I regret it or not…

The 8P variant never really appealed in the same way, the platform was ancient by the time the RS3 made an appearance.

The 8V suffered 2 problems at its launch. An ancient platform and the fact it came out at the same time as the 1M. Although the 2 offered completely different configurations the motoring press couldn't help themselves from comparing the 2 as baby halo models from German manufacturers. Inevitably the 1M came out on top every single time.

Yep I remember the magazine I bought with them both on the cover. I even remember chatting to the Audi guy on the festival of speed stand about the result! Congrats Ben looks a good example, and its a peach of an engine, but it was a test bed for the upcoming more powerful better sounding 8v - could the budget have stretched to a leggy one?. No oval pipe was weird as well

Remap on the list?

Nice, I’d prefer mine in Bruv-spec though (wind deflectors and 3D plate), needs more owners too. Something like this would’ve been a good choice

Always loved the shape and sound of these. Was put off by the constant negative reporting around steering feel and understeer etc. Overall though, I do love these smile

Looks a fine example of the marque. I considered one myself as a replacement for the M135i. After a couple of test drives decided not for for me and went for a 140i.

Has to be one of the dullest performance cars ever.

Surely it won't be long before it is sold too?

I didn't realise the exhausts came like that on it, basically like later S3 ones but without them on the right too. I always thought they had the two oval pipes with the small round ones inside.

No no no, that's one of the rare non-Cat S cars, you don't want that.

Here's a nice Cat S example from the spiritual home of the fast German car, Bradford. cloud9

Did you just describe an A3 as "something a little different"? Was that tongue-in-cheek?

Yeah, but what about mileage? And how many miles had it done?

I had one back in the day when they came out. Misano Red I think it was called with the bucket seats. It wasn't the sharpest drive, but as an all weather performance car it's served me well.

At the time I was offered a 1M and turned it down for the RS3 as I lived in the sticks and needed a 4WD car. If only I knew...

I'd love to experience this engine one day for sure. They make a lovely noise as well I reckon.

Brilliant engine but the 8P is not a particularly sharp steer. You're honestly better off paying a bit more money for a pre-facelift 8V and sticking a stiffer anti roll bar on the back. Night and day difference in handling from stock and a great do-it-all car that makes a brilliant noise. Remap and remove the secondary cats and it becomes a proper howler as well

I really like the 5 cylinder engine that Audi used in these.

The rest of it doesn’t do much for me personally. I’d have probably gone with tge facelifted M135i despite its flaws.

I had pretty much the exact same dilemma, coming from a highly modified Megane RS that was a sub 8 minute ring tool and needing more practicality daily for growing teens. I narrowed it down to two cars, the RS3 and the one I ended up going with because, and looks to be the same reason as you Ben, every other bugger where I live has one.

So i chose the Focus RS Mk3. Much more fun than the Audi (for me). Not as refined by a long shot around town etc. But its more than manageable and when it comes to B-roads and getting away from the city the Focus just ran rings around the RS enjoyment wise. Both great cars and I bet we are both as happy with our choices. I will also covet an RS3 a little but they are just too common where i'm from that I just couldn't join that crowd.

Enjoy the car, it looks fantastic!

Ha ha, I remember watching a YT vid of one of the former plod from Inteceptors, he said they always stopped (or tried to stop) RS3 and S3's because "who the hell is going to get insurance on an group 40 car with a BD postcode".

I shouldn't mock, I've got a Golf R, or Golf FTS as the local police call them.

My wife used to have one. When this popped up after selling it to WBAC not one person would have believed it was a genuinely well looked after, one lady owner, low mileage example. But it was. It’ll be bruv spec by now I’d imagine.

Have one myself in misano red. Had it 4 and a half years now and it's been fault free except for a water pump last week.
Values of them haven't moved much in the last 5 years 😁
