JLR's Future Energy Lab is £250m EV hatchery

Designing Electric Drive Units is essential to the next generation of EV. JLR goes all in on new test facility

JLR is gearing up to launch nine all-electric new models by 2030. You may have heard. What you might not know is that a £250m slice of its much-publicised £15bn investment pie had been earmarked for a new, state-of-the-art EV test facility - and today the firm declared the new 323,000 square foot facility open. Situated at its Whitley Engineering Centre in Coventry, the so-called Future Energy Lab already employs 200 EV engineers and JLR reckons an additional 150 roles will be required to keep the building humming.

What exactly will this regiment of plug-in specialists be doing? Well, this is all about scaling up JLR’s capacity for testing and development, so expect everything from electric test rigs to the design and development of new Electric Drive Units (EDU). Apparently, this includes a series of extreme-weather climate chambers for simulating atmospheric conditions ranging from -40 all the way to 55 degrees.

The latter is important because the manufacturer reckons that it will reduce the requirement for dispatching a fleet of prototype vehicles around the world. Really though, slightly silly name aside, the Future Energy Lab is about JLR doing more things in-house at a much faster speed - something it will absolutely need to do as it gallops towards an all-electric future. The opening of the new facility comes just three months after Tata confirmed that it would build its flagship electric car battery factory in the UK.

Of course, it’ll be years till we see the fruits of that investment, whereas the FEL is already playing host to the new Range Rover BEV (pictured above). JLR has confirmed that the incoming battery-electric model, due to launch in 2024, is one of the cars due to undergo thousands of hours of testing on the new rigs. “Our vehicles are, and continue to be, at the forefront of an all-electric automotive future,” noted Thomas Mueller, Executive Director of Product Engineering at JLR. “This facility, a core component of our Reimagine strategy, is essential to providing the advanced testing capabilities that will be vital to the performance and reliability of the modern luxury vehicles we are proudly developing.”

I wonder how many JLR staff have had written warnings on having their own star wars duels

Future Energy Lab does sound a bit more acceptable than Death Star I suppose.

Can they just open a centre that concentrates on them engineering and building a reliable product?

It doesn’t matter how much they give it the big sell, there is no chance of ever convincing me of owning another one of their products. Ever.

It's not actually a Death Star, apologies if I misled you, the purpose of the facility is to improve performance and reliability...

Invest in making them reliable, especially if the price is going to be upward of 100k + for a Jaaaaaaag

And then invest in the security so they don't get nicked off people's drives all the time.

Ready for what?

If you mean the 5 million that might be on the roads by then, I'd say we have a reasonable chance.

Getting Simple stuff wrong is what destroys the ownership experience …

To paraphrase others
1) be reliable
2) be on my doorstep tomorrow morning when I need you

Then go back and look at these 2 above in any order…
Anything else is just marketing froth, from focus groups.
if those 2 fundamentals are missing you have nothing.

If you cannot retain existing customers to buy a second subsequent car you don’t have any future.
Existing customers should be your best advocates, if your existing product is rubbish, at least you should offer the best dealership experience….tea and sympathy have their place, they actually buy you time.

3) being pretty and not German is not 3rd,… it’s about 20th …. jaguar please listen

That's 1.66% of the budget. That's extremely low, isn't it?

I thought that was a new logo on the side of the building, just googled the JLR website, and was met with this load of old tosh:- “ The new brand identity aspires to remove ambiguity and bring to the fore the unique DNA of each of JLR’s brands - Range Rover, Defender, Discovery and Jaguar – as well as accelerate the delivery of the company’s vision to be Proud Creators of Modern Luxury. ”

What does that actually mean or say? - what ambiguity ? JAGUAR LANDROVER was pretty clear, JLR is less so - especially when the L bit isnt even mentioned in the lineup! Maybe they should have rebranded as JDDRR lol

If they cant even express what they mean by their own branding clearly, then how the hell can they fix the issues mentioned above (reliability and security) (mind you if the reliability really is as bad as when i last bought one, theft wont be such a big problem)

Is this facility something new for the industry, or just JLR shouting about playing catchup with competitors?

I see it as part of a reset in culture that they are trying to achieve. Jaguar are going all electric in 2025, Land Rover maybe 5 years behind that, now would be a perfect time to essentially start from scratch.
Last year they made quite a bit of noise about retraining tens of thousands of staff for a fully electric future.
A new facility, newly trained staff, new culture, it makes sense, i.e. leave all the old ways behind when you walk into this building.

Edited to add: Given the current situation with thefts, fires and reliability, it’s a bit naughty calling it a hatchery.

Suggests the products will still end up being poached, scrambled or fried….

I'm certainly not a JLR fan. Once bitten twice shy & all that. However as a Cov kid I'm glad that TATA have continued to invest in the UK & keep their testing in the City. Who knows in the future if their products get better i may be tempted over to the dark side again. Just cant feel the force just yet.getmecoat

It’s not a light sabre it’s a battery leak on a hybrid defender.
