Halloween Special- Spooky motoring tales
Discussion
Given its the season I was reminded recently of a very unusual event that happened to me.
As a teenager I had gone to visit a friend near Hemyock in Devon and had cycled there over the Blackdown hills from near Taunton, the route takes you past a few disused military airfields from WW2, Dunkerswell is still in service but Smetharpe (ex RAF Uppotery)is disused and at the time was derelict.
I ended up drinking a bit & stayed at my friend’s house.
The following morning set off in the fog and as I cycled past Smetharpe airfield was met by the utterly bizarre sight of a WW2 era military truck driving the other way.
A few minutes later an old T series MG passed.
I had to stop & give my head a proper wobble and the un-nerving atmosphere was only relieved a few miles later when I saw a modern car pass by.
Funny thing is, the fog had started to clear as the modern car appeared.
I’m rational enough to get that it was a classic military vehicle enthusiast heading off to a show or similar on a Sunday morning, probably with the MG in convoy catching them up.
But I made me feel very peculiar for quite a time afterwards.

What are your supernatural motoring events?
Haunted Austin Ambassador or maybe a part salvaged from a written off car that ‘cursed’ yours until it was substituted?

My mate owned a Lancia Beta coupe a few years ago that was very very unreliable. It was certainly an experience that haunted him for quite a while, Does that count?
Shame as it was a lovely looking car that wasn't rusting its way back to nature either.
I've had a few odd experiences over the years (like most people) but nothing in cars..

Not really Halloween but this has still got me scratching my head 6 months later.
I drive an old 2004 Audi A4 estate for work. Had a site visit the other side of Northampton (I live in Swindon for my sins). Anyway, hopped in and first roundabout I come to I get the tell tale double speed indicator lamp. Bugger, must have a right hand bulb out.
Right, I’ll find a Halfords when I get to Northampton and get a new bulb and sort it out. I got as far as the A43 passing the US site Croughton (between M40 & Brackley) and another Audi A4 of the exact same vintage passes me and as he indicates left his rear n/s indicator is going at double speed. I have a chuckle to myself and crack on. Now this is where it gets weird - the next roundabout where I was heading right around the Brackley ring road my right hand indicators are absolutely fine.
This was back in May and it’s been fine since…..
Explain that ghostbusters! :-)

The OP’s story reminds me of the time I was out for a walk, and was strolling through the forest between Epping and North Weald, when an old RT bus full of passengers came past. It gave me the wobbles big time. It looked very ghostly.
Later I realised that the Epping to Ongar rail line (an old disused bit of the London Underground) had just opened, but the track as far as North Weald was still unusable, so they were running a bus replacement service with vintage vehicles.
Gave me a proper turn though.

Not paranormal really just odd in a sad way.
One pool car we had years ago was a 200 series Rover, the reg' number was D??? EAD. Everybody that used it commented on the unfortunate letters when they signed it out.
Two guys used it one day for a long trip and when they arrived at their destination the driver could not wake the passenger.
He wasn't asleep, he had sadly passed away on the journey.

May have told this story elsewhere here, but on the way back home fairly late - Very dark, can't remember the exact time, fairly low traffic.
Was making my way down the A13 towards London (Fairly busy route even at quiet times) and there was someone running towards oncoming traffic alongside the central reservation on the 3 Lane section.
They were way between junctions, and wrapped in a bedsheet - No shoes or other clothes that I saw on my way past?
Very odd - Did call the police in case someone had escaped an asylum but never heard or saw anything further of it.
Now I think of it, there was the one (Non motoring?) time I was getting a lift home from the station as I'd been for some after work drinks - Standing there at midnight and a chap comes along who was having a mental health crisis and about to take a stroll in front of the last train of the night...

There was a girl who used to hitchhike at night on a hill near to Brands Hatch.
She’d get in a car, tell the driver her address and then a few minutes later, she’d vanish from the passenger seat.
The driver would then go to the address and her parents who lived in the house would tell them that she had been killed many years ago on the hill where she was picked up.
It’s happened to many people.
Night night.

Where I used to live in Guisborough in North Yorkshire, there was the legend of a ghost on a road called Rectory Lane.
Said ghost would only appear when driving along it, a figure of a man that’d jump out in front of the car, causing the driver to swerve and crash.
The man would never appear if you walked down the road, only if you drove it.
Supposedly the man hated cars as they ruined his business and then was ran over by one in the early days of motoring.

Variations of this spooky tale are oft repeated. She’d get in a car, tell the driver her address and then a few minutes later, she’d vanish from the passenger seat.

I quite like the haunted car tales, in 1931 Evelyn Foster
a young taxi driver was murdered [ or accidentally
immolated herself ], her Hudson car was slightly
fire damaged but was refinished and sold on.
The new owners reported that the car behaved OK but when
it passed the location of the tragedy
near Otterburn the steeering wheel was taken over by unknown
force and the car would attempt
to go offroad to the area where Evelyn was attacked.
