You can as long as there's no pesky clutch pedal

Yes. 2 pedals auto, 3 pedals manual. Pedals matter, paddles don't.

It's a pedal in the location of a clutch pedal but it's not (with a few exceptions) a clutch pedal.

I just realised that the OP may have meant shift "paddles" (behind the steering wheel) not shift "pedal"

Actually that's an interesting point - can you drive a pre-selector gearbox on an automatic licence?

Unsure if this is latest version but FWIW:

https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2007/95/pdfs/u...

(b) “vehicle with automatic transmission” means a vehicle in which either—
(i) the driver is not provided with any means whereby he may vary the gear ratio
between the engine and the road wheels independently of the accelerator and the
brakes, or
(ii) he is provided with such means but they do not include a clutch pedal or lever which
he may operate manually,

What is the car in question?

I thought it was always quite a grey area. I might have been fed false information, but I had once been told that the Porsche Triptonic in the 996/986 and the BMW SMG in the E46 M3 were only to be driven with a manual license. But I was told that a while ago and never "fact checked" this information.

You can only fact check if there is some data, rationale or fact to check.

The key question is why? Otherwise you are with blind believed just following.

You can drive a Ford Model T on an automatic licence, apparently.

Given the E46 has a (terrible) auto-mode, I can’t see any reason why you couldn’t drive it on an automatic licence. In fact, from memory my CSL was classed as “automatic” transmission on the registration document

The one Is be curious about is the Saab 900 Sensonic
