Mercedes R63 AMG | Spotted

One truly silly AMG to rule them all

AMG knew it was onto something special with the M156. No longer would it have to be content with modifying Mercedes engines to make them fit for flagship status. This was an AMG engine, from its design to its specification, and it was stupendously good. AMG knew it. The world would come to know it soon enough. But excitement rather got the better of the good folk of Affalterbach (and probably even the suits at Mercedes Benz), because the 6.2 was first seen in… a CLK. Not really best foot forward for such a momentous feat of engineering, even if it did eventually become the Black Series.

Still, that first port of call for the M156 did at least preview the madcap AMG approach to deploying it: the V8 was going anywhere and everywhere. It was most famously employed in the ‘204-generation C63 (perhaps where the engine should have debuted for maximum impact), then in E- and S-Class saloons, SL- and CL-Class two doors, more than one SUV, the SLS supercar… yes, sir - AMG definitely got the most out of the engineering effort that went into the M156. The fact that a version is still used in the AMG GT3 race cars demonstrates just what an awesome thing it is.

Even by those standards, however, installing that V8 into an R-Class - creating the R63 AMG - was truly barmy. Not least because the standard car was a real curio, a sort of MPV-cum-SUV that didn’t really offer the full benefits of either. Even with more frugal petrol and diesel options, the R never sold brilliantly in Britain, though it actually soldiered on with some success in China all the way till 2017.

In the R63, buyers got 510hp and 465lb ft from the V8, healthy gains over the C63 installation that meant a 4.9-second 0-62mph dash was possible. But it was a much larger, heavier car, and just didn’t have the chassis to take full  advantage of the powertrain. There wasn’t the image of the ML or GL SUVs, either - it still looked like the family bus it once was. The R was available for just one model year, with only 322 produced in total. It’s easy to see why this ‘63 project didn’t quite work out, but the rarity (and that engine) makes finding one today really quite exciting. Forget Black Series, GT R Pros and 507s - here’s the really rare AMG.

This example looks like a UK-spec, right-hand drive car; if it is, it’ll be one of just 12 sold over here. So basically one a month was sold across the entire British Isles for a year, back in those pre-meltdown days when everything was going great. Good job it didn’t arrive any later or Mercedes may not have sold any at all.

Though the ad is still waiting on some additional details, the mileage is low (64k) and the pics show an R63 looking… well, as good as an R63 is ever likely to look. There are unlikely to be many better ones out there. If you’re into this car, it’ll surely be despite its looks and not because of them. On PH, we know not to judge a book by its cover - never has that been more true than for the R63. If the AMG collection is missing a final puzzle piece or the kids’ inheritance is better off spent right now, look no further.

Or get the same car as a ML63 for about 1/3rd of the price?

Oh and did somebody say head bolts…

Always liked these. I had an R320 CDI myself and sold it for an ML63 when ULEZ was on its way in a few years back. The R-class had a lot of little touches that really made it seem like Merc took their time to make it as good as it could be; I'm sure I've read before that it's basically an S-class for the family man.

Even simple things like at least 5 12V chargers, in an era well before USB ports were commonplace, and rear seats (both 2nd and 3rd rows) that you could use with one hand, i.e. if you were using the other to hold/restrain a kid. Plus individual heating controls for the second row so your kids don't need to argue about how Tweedle-Dee is too cold but Tweedle-Dum is too warm.

My bus had 288bhp but was surprisingly quick, I remember moving my sister out from her uni once and out-dragging a Fiesta ST, even with a dorm room in the back.

I'm not sure I'd pay nearly £35k for a car like this, as special as it may be. As mentioned an ML is a far cheaper option (I spent less than 5 figures on mine) if you want an easy way into M156 ownership, and if you want a fast MPV, there's an R500 for sale for £4k that you could stick some forced induction on, add some decent suspension, decent brakes and you'd still probably be well under half the cost of that R63.

Also, as a side note, whoever re-badged that R63 didn't do their homework. There's a space missing.

I've since sold my ML but I can understand the appeal of that incredible 6.2 V8. Hence why I bought a C63 biggrin

Looking at a couple of MB forums it seems the R has acquired a quasi cult following, as noted above the utility of interior and the care the care that went into it was several notches up on the contemporary ML.

Maybe that's why the price; but I'd rather a diesel for a most luxurious tip-car, adding the M156 would make me sad - a dismal grave for such a jewel of an engine! (Ditto an early ML.)

As hard as I try I just do not like Merc interiors of this vintage.

Nothing against these but the price seems very high to me.

Can't remember the last time I saw one to be fair, regardless of engine.

I loved the R-Class, it is a shame that Mercedes stepped out of the luxury people carrier market, a niche that they invented and owned.

34 grand ?

Wonder who would buy that, proper money for an ancient posh Ford Galaxy with the thirstiest engine in the world.

Seems a shame it being stuck in that big lump, but I guess it is at least an interesting curiosity.

That really is a 10k punt.

Rare for a reason but then if fuel bills are irrelevant and you've got 4 kids why not?

Yeah but that dealer has form - obviously been stuck in that cess pit London gives one some funny ideas on 'market value'.

I wouldn't buy this over... well, basically anything else, but I will say this: in January 2019 I was skiing in Bulgaria when I fractured my right femur. A week in a Bulgarian hospital, followed by two nights in a hotel waiting for the insurance company to find me a repatriation flight and then one of these to take me to the airport. OK, it was a 320CDI, but I remember it being incredibly comfortable and roomy enough in the front for me to sit with my leg outstretched. Always had a soft spot for them since then.

It's a reflection on how the oxymoron of the 'performance SUV' has become normalised that this R63 is described as 'barmy', when compared to those ludicrous devices, it is the far more rational machine. It will have a lower centre of gravity and better aerodynamics than any Range Rover SVR or Cayenne Turbo S, two things that a real performance engineer would kill for. And within a comparable size of car, much better accommodation for passengers and/or luggage alongside that drivetrain.

Is there a record going for the quickest six-up lap of the Ring?

Incidentally there's a great recent Readers' Cars thread on an R500L here https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Is this the same car?

https://collectingcars.com/for-sale/2006-mercedes-...

CC also sold what appears to be the same car in 2022 (although they claim the colour to be different in this sale)

Unless the Malaysian Prime Minister owned TWO of them.

I wasn't aware that the R class even existed, let alone as an AMG. Now that I am I don't feel any better for it.

Seems like a waste of a good engine to me.

Still, each to their own.

Gotta be the same car. A real curio and I'd have guessed at a £15-20k kind of price, but looking at the CC final prices it's achieved in the last 18 months then it clearly is a £30k+ car, which really does surprise me!

Yup, same for sure. They haven't even taken the MB Club badge off the screen

Crikey, I knew they were rare, but not almost ‘single figures registered’ rare…

That looks like quite a stretch on price tbh…

I was thinking 20 and a bit k - not £33k…

Hey ho…

I actually always liked the merc family bus, much better than it’s SUVs at doing the job. But I wouldn’t buy one with a crazy V8.

If I wanted a sporty MPV, I would get a Renault Espace F1 😂😂😂

Rare because they were a mental idea and not in a really good way, you buy an MPV for transporting folk about in comfort, any of the other options would be fast enough so a 6.2 litre barking mad N/A version, its fast but not that fast compared to the other options for that money if thats what you want.

Hard sell at 33 grand, should really be one of those you pass and think its cheap, not expensive, I would have thought 10/11 grand, just not sure who bought them new (not many) as it was a new car, suited the job and was on Mercs price list, but 17 years later who the hell would part with 33 grand for it ?

Always fancied one of these as a leftfield choice. To the unassuming eye, it's just a big old people carrier.

But. plant your foot and off it will shoot.

These were available for under £8k not too long ago, so £34k is just madness.
