This one has thrown me a little bit. My current insurer has requested a copy of no claims bonus, driving license and copy of v5 logbook

Is this a normal thing? we're 6/7 weeks into the policy

First time it's happened to me in over 18 years of driving and although no foul play im taken back by it. Last thing I want is insurance cancelled. I've been back through policy details 2/3 times everything is correct etc...

Email has been sent off with all relevant documents included and will contact tomorrow to ensure they have received them

Thanks ste

I've had insurers asking for copies of proof of no claims before. The other two are... very unusual.

Not sure why they’d want all those details, never been asked apart from no claims bonus proof, but haven’t even done that in the last few years as it’s all recorded somewhere.

I would say its not unknown.

A risk validation check by the insurer concerned.

Probably random, maybe something like every 10 or 20 policies.

As long as all information disclosed correctly nothing to be alarmed about IMO

Pretty standard now if youve gone with a new company, nothing to stress over.

Mrs DS got a new motorbike a few weeks ago, and, as with all our motor/home policies I had to deal with it.

The broker is, shall we say, one of the principal (ahem) players in the market, and after the policy had been started they requested

- copy of NCD
- scans of our licences
- V5(C)
- DVLA access codes so they could look at our licences

The interface to load all this was awful.

This was for a 72bhp machine, not some sportsbike. It all seemed rather excessive - I can’t remember the last time they couldn’t get the NCD online, let alone all the rest.

Weirdly the underwriter is Aviva, who currently insure all our cars and our home - I’ve never had to provide all of the above guff to them.

Then I received an email telling me that they’d received the docs.

The next day saying they hadn’t.

So I tried ringing them. Again. And again. And again. Endless queue.

Webchat permanently offline.

So I left a message complaining. Have I heard back? Have I hell.

If I’d known how bad this broker was I would never ever have gone through them - their customer service is appalling. If they’d answered the phone I could have exercised my rights under the 14 day rule. The thought of having to make a claim worries me.

Never again!

How long have you owned the car? If it's not very long then proof of purchase and proof of funds is required by the FCA. Doing a driving license check is pretty standard and usually done on line with a check code. The only strange thing is the length taken to ask - should have been in the first few days.

How is proof of funds anything to do with the insurer? Also it wasn't what the OP was asked for,

Anything particularly unusual about the car or you, or is this a big standard vehicle owned by an unremarkable driver?

Sounds a bit unusual for the latter.

It's driving *licence* as it's a noun. License is a verb.

Likewise "I'd like some advice please" - " Well, I'd advise you to stop correcting grammar".

As to the question, in my experience the NCB request is quite common, the other two less so.

I had insurer cause a panic before, writing to inform me they have found serious discrepancies and will be canceled within 14 days.

I presumed it was because:

1. listed a ton of modifications (incl nearly every safety & theft risk reducing)
Or
2. Because the 2L 4 bangers reg was prior insured with a bigger v6 engine year before having never been transferred.

They wanted only one thing, a Licence check code from gov online and all was ok, caused me a right panic as was cheapest quote by far.

At renewal of my Westfield a few months ago a broker asked me where my garage was as he couldn't see it on Google street view! Never been asked that before...

To be fair I’d quite welcome an inspection of my garage and security - they might be so impressed they lower the premium.

He was asked for ownership. As for proof of funds it's an FCA thing - if you'd like more info (which is fine) I can sort that towards the end of the week.

I changed insurer in June and got asked for NCD proof which is fair enough.

Also a copy of my driving licence - OK, but unusual.

Then finally a code so they could check with DVLA for any endorsements - never been asked for that before!

But I had nothing to hide so I just sent it all.

Just to bring this to a close in case anyone gets spooked out by this

Spoke to insurance today. Apparently these checks are going to be the norm and are standard checks for my insurer

I got a more helpful guy on the phone today who actually took the time to explain what each one is checking.

No claims bonus - the most obvious one just confirming proof

Driving licence check - confirms address validation, personal info is correct

V5c - again checks when car was purchased and address it's been registered to, named keeper etc...

Apparently my car has been flagged up as a model that insurance fronting is a regular thing on which explains the above checks

Everything checked out as I knew it would but you can't help panic when you're getting a threatening letters to cancel insurance within 7 days!

In the post? If so then also Email them it as evidence of the contents of any recorded mail to play it safe, don't want a minor incident turning into strong will not to pay out citing they never had proof in time, as unlikely as that could actually be.
