Where are all the stolen RRS/Evoques/Discos going?
Discussion
Don’t jump on me for bad maths here - I’ve just taken figures I’m seeing in the press and multiplying them just out of interest.
Following on from a thread I was on on FB I did some back of fag packet calculations and - if my maths is right - the results are pretty incredible…
I’m seeing figures of 90 per day in London. Let’s conservatively extrapolate this over the entire UK and call it 150 a day.
Assuming 30 days per month that’s 4500 a month.
Assuming 5.5 metres length needed per vehicle that’s a queue 24.75km of Rangies being nicked every month.
I realise that there’s a lot of assumptions built into the above, but even if you halve it it’s still absolutely mind blowing.
Where are all these cars going? Where are they being stashed?
Surely the supply of RRs to steal will run out? Do JLR even sell that many a month?
And the MET - they don’t know anything about who is doing this or where the cars go? The quantities are so vast I can’t actually believe it.
And this is before we even start on all the other nicked cars.

LR sold about 43k cars last year, so roughly 3500 a month.
26,117 car thefts in London in 2022, 98,730 in the UK.
5200 of them were Range Rovers
Anecdotally, lots seem to get stolen multiple times. It seems trivial for any idiot with the right (relatively cheap) kit to steal one but they tend to just park it up somewhere for a few days to see if it has a tracker - given that most insurers now require one, the owner just goes and gets their car back.
Those that do disappear - sent overseas either whole or chopped into smaller parts.

I agree, I do wonder if there's nearly 50,000 people a year in Europe (using your maths - which I'm not disputing btw) willing to pay for and run around in a nicked UK Rangie - surely RHD is a massive pain in the arse in Albania or wherever they're going and they aren't exactly going to blend in. Unless everyone's got one I suppose!Following on from a thread I was on on FB I did some back of fag packet calculations and - if my maths is right - the results are pretty incredible…

A lot of southern and eastern African countries are RHD.
Parts can go all over the place as many aren't LHD/RHD specific.
Yup a lot of these end up in chop shops for parts that are easier to ship and harder to trace/recover.
Otherwise being RHD has no bearing really. Bodge conversions can be done as things like MOT doesn't matter in the places they end up.
Easten Europe/West Asia typically, parts end up in places like Saudi/UAE as there's plenty of rich over there with big SUVs.

There’s huge demand for parts, body panels, lights etc for accident repairs.
Then replacement engines for other cars.
Some do get shipped out.
A guy on one of the stolen FB pages saw his car, still with the U.K. plates, in Uganda.
There was a large chop shop found earlier this year.
100 front ends of cars of modern landys found.
But then, lots of various models and makes get stolen, JLR just have a crap security atm which isn’t helping and the weakness in a well known.
Mk2 sport, cut open the tailgate and the wiring inside can be accessed to open the car.
So any mk2 sport with a sticker in the top right of the tailgate should be checked as it’s known to stick a U.K. sticker over it to hide it.

Stuck in a container somewhere quiet and then shipped internationally toot sweet, I reckon
Do you mean tout suite?Quite an appropriate expression that will be appreciated by the etymologic linguists.
Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff

sounds like a bad movie plot, with the bad guy being Gerry McGovern (to Discovery enthusiasts he already is, but that's another story)
