A hypothetical question, it's strange what the brain does at 3am.

My car insurance provides for a hire car if mine is off the road due to accident or loss. In order to reduce costs would my insurance company say *you have another car, you don't need a hire car".

Just to complicate matters my second car is a classic on a restricted mileage, not usually insured for commuting or business. And with it being British from the 70s it's allergic to cold, wet and salt.

Like I say, it's all hypothetical.

I think they’re unlikely too, but I’ve just posted this in another thread as I’m in the same situation albeit with an mid 2000s second car:

Given hire costs are extortionate, if I don’t need a hire car (as I have another car I can use), are there policies that don’t offer a hire car, or where it can be removed - in exchange for a significantly cheaper policy?

It seem the hire car cover is provided at the general policy holders expense purely for everyone else to make money on.

no they won't

but as an aside to that.

A few years ago my second car (Forester) was hit and off road. I declined the offered hire car and the bodyshop guy told me I could get £24 (i think) day in lieu of unwanted hire car which I did.

This was from a claim direct off the other drivers insurance though so maybe not relevant.

I do comparison insurance quotes frequently. I've not noticed a smaller premium for no hire car, it's standard on all policies, as a duty of care I expect. However, I've seen the option of an equivalent car to the one insured rather than a basic one, which costs more, of course. rolleyes

Based on my sample size of 1, the policy price made no appreciable difference with or without a hire car.

However, the last 2 companies offered a default choice of an FSO Polenez or a Datsun Cherry, unless you paid an extra £10-£20 on top of the basic policy price.. wink
