Morning all.

Just a quick question as I am in a new situation.

I had the slave cylinder and clutch replaced after a breakdown 3 1/2 weeks ago. On Sunday it looks like the fault has come back. RAC took it back to the garage yesterday that did it. It's also an RAC approved garage.

If it's proven to be the same fault (bad replacement parts/crap workmanship), can I expect to get the whole thing sorted for free?

Not really sure why it is even a question...

Of course, if the parts used in the repair have failed, then it should be fixed by the garage 'under warranty' as in some form of expectation that they have done the work to a decent standard.

However, if the fixed the 'wrong' issue and a further fix is required, then it gets a bit more messy.

It is pretty unlikely that a new clutch is going to fail with in a few weeks.
Ask the garage what they think has happened.

Providing the garage sourced the parts and it's the new parts that have failed due to a manufacturing issue, then the garage should obtain new parts and fit for free. They can claiming labour costs from the parts provider or manufacturer although many parts manufacturers will have limit to how much they can claim that will be well below most garages normal labour rate.

Issue like these are the exact reason many garages won't fit customer provided parts. It all become a bit tricky who pays for the additional labour, as the garage have no contract with the parts supplier.

Is that the case? I always assumed the garage had to suck it up. Most business will not pick up consequential losses.

Certainly the parts manufacturer / remanufacturer I previously worked for did for brake discs and clutches. If the part was found to be faulty then they would pay for the book hours for the job but only at something like £20 per hour, this was a good few years back but still far less that most garage labour rates at the time.

They also offered a no quibble warranty on parts where they would swap parts for new ones regardless of fault providing the garage wasn't claiming any labour. Many garages would choose this option rather than trying to claim the labour as the vast majority of cases the fault would turn out to be a fitting fault rather than a manufacturing fault.
