Isn't this a car jacking situation though? He can show that he was literally right there grappling with the scumbag. I certainly don't condone this practice though; Mrs D has a habit of popping back in "just for a sec", which means I go out and guard the car. She thinks I'm just being anal.

Obviously the insurance will see it as black and white and will have some wording that means he's screwed, but seeing as standard procedure to deice a car is to start the engine, set all the various demisters and deicers going, then to get back out and start scraping/sliding the ice, I think I would be pushing back if it were me (although I might have more luck seeing as I would be stood next to the car with scraper in hand when the thief jumps in rather than in the house thinking "hey, I better go and stop that person about to nick my car!")
Anyway, is this another reason to always reverse onto drives? Avoid getting squashed if you wrestle with the person stealing your car?
Leaving your car running on the road is called 'quitting', and i believe its actually an offence you can be fined for.
If you're going to do it, at least either have a spare key and lock the doors, assuming your chosen car is compatible with doing this, and/or leave a steering lock on overnight and don't remove it till you're in the car ready to drive away.

My current policy specifically excludes cover for Loss or Damage caused by theft or attempted theft if
"the vehicle is not fully locked and secured, or
the keys and/or any other device(s) that are unlock and/or start the vehicle are in, on or next to the vehicle while it is left unattended and/or unoccupied".
Which seems pretty standard these days.
Good luck to the owner!
