Manual gearbox readied for BMW Z4 M40i

Three pedals made the Toyota Supra infinitely better; can it do the same for BMW's staid roadster?

Good news. It seems like BMW is finally poised to announce a six-speed manual gearbox option for the current Z4 M40i. Said to have been in the planning for some time - and obviously occurring in the wake of Toyota’s decision to offer a DIY transmission in the mechanically related Supra - the firm has evidently decided that it’s time to give people a better reason for choosing the roadster over its livelier rivals (chiefly the Porsche Boxster).

Revealed by BMWblog - indeed, they’ve had a go in a prototype - the new version is said to have been mainly developed with the US market in mind, where, lest we forget, the M40i's B58 straight-six pumps out a pleasingly unhindered 382hp, not the 340hp it gets here. Moreover, BMW says the new gearbox has been developed specifically for the Z4 and gets different linkages to the Supra and a shift quality all of its own. With a shorter lever, it is said to be unlike any six-speed manual offered elsewhere in the manufacturer’s lineup.

In addition to the gearbox (which has still not officially been confirmed), it appears that BMW, like Toyota before it, has taken the opportunity to tweak the M40i more generally. A new rear axle assembly is said to come from the M240i, including its uprated differential, while at the front the anti-roll bar mounts have been reinforced and the adaptive dampers retuned for a newly staggered wheel size. Much as it did with the Supra, the modifications are said to be transformative, and rather what the punchiest Z4 needed to stand out as a proper flagship.

Better yet, BMWblog reckons it won’t be solely the preserve of the US market either. There are snaps of it testing in Europe, and given that it is built at Magna Steyr’s factory in Graz, it makes sense that it would be offered here - albeit still with the slightly more stifled engine. Whether or not the three-pedal M40i makes it to the UK isn’t yet clear, although it seems likely to come with a premium attached if it does. There are apparently rumours of a $3,500 premium in the States. You’d imagine it would be more keenly priced here, and at £57,295 starting, even a moderate markup would likely see it undercut the £63,800 you’ll pay for a 718 Boxster S. Here’s hoping, eh? More news when we have it.

Lovely color and great to get the manual back.

At last people may get some choice - what took them so long?

Maybe it only happened thanks to Toyota making manual Supras!

Imagine if Alpina made a version like they did with the old Z4 love

Where are the tacky Alpina graphics though?

BMW dealt with that when they launched the M in the facelift!

I'd hate to try cleaning those Alpina wheels anyway.

I was going to start a thread about this yesterday, and it is really good news I reckon. It has got me thinking how nice one of these would be as a weekend car now.

My only slight reservation here would be the looks. I know it's subjective, but it's a big consideration to me, but it is surely one of the better-looking BMWs for sure! I could still be persuaded, though, and then, what's not to like on a Sunday blast smile

Maybe, just maybe...they won't bother with a clutch delay valve this time.

BMW manuals are not up to much in my opinion. Never got along with them.

I wondered that. Anyone know what proportion of Supras are sold as manual now?

Still think the Supra looks better though, I just need to prise the the wife away from her Z4.

I've driven the previous two gens and never really considered them "sports cars" in the way they drive.
Especially the last gen already felt like a large and lardy car in the way it drove to me, I drove a manual at the time and I always thought an auto would have suited that car better.
Maybe the new ones and esp the "m" ones have a sharper setup though.

I think these are underrated cars and make for a great GT. I suspect the auto will ultimately suit it better but the choice is a good one.
In realty, when looking at available deals and nearly new, they’re not much more than half the price of a Boxster.

Its nice to hear that the gearshift will be unlike any other 6sp manual shift from BMW, it means this one has a chance of being decent....

Always surprised I see more Supra's than I do Z4s given that (to my eyes at least) the Z4 is the better looking car by far. The addition of a manual is long overdue for this, hopefully it tempts more buyers.

Also, that colour is amazing.

In a sea of dull grey/silver/black/white repmobiles this looks utterly gorgeous

This Alpina is just lovely.

I would prefer a GR Supra though, but can absolutely see the appeal of a manual Z4 M40i.

It goes to show that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The appeal of the Z4 to me is as a convertible, despite the looks.
I think it looks ok in a classic roadster way, but the Supra is a good looking machine in my eyes, the Z4 doesn't come close.

I've seen a few Supras but not spotted a single Z4 out and about except at dealerships.

Presumably therefore these manual editions will be as rare as hen's teeth.

Exactly. I was looking for a manual M140i and then I tried one out, was rubbery, vague action and in wrong position. BMWs tagline for so long was The Ultimate Driving Machine . . it’s amazing they could never get this right
