My partner and I have just decided we are going to relocate to Spain next year. We'd like to bring our Lease car (Audi) which we take delivery of next week.

I know we need to get a VE103B from VWFS but they only give permission to take the car out of the UK for 90 days per 12 months.

Will this be an issue in reality?

Anything else I need to consider?

Is it a bad idea?

Its a bad idea full stop for many reasons if you are relocating permanently, I'd be cancelling that lease asap and buying a car when you get to Spain.

It's not permanent, we travel a lot but want our base to be there this year.

What would be the warranty situation if you had a fault with the car? Would main dealer in Spain fix it or would it have to be towed back to the UK?

You can only drive a UK reg'd car for six months in Spain, if you are classed as a resident you only get a month, also with Brexit if you wish to be in Spain for longer than 90 days every 180, you must apply for a visa before entering the country, long gone are the days where you could stay as long as you like.

Also you may find it a struggle for an insurer to cover you for more than 90 days.

If you are going to be travelling a lot, then a lease car sounds like a bit of a waste?

Cancel the lease, move to Spain, buy a small runaround, which you don't mind leaving behind when you travel.

If you are going to be using the car to travel around, then you need to properly investigate insurance, registration, tax etc for a car that will potentially be visiting many different countries?

And as others have mentioned, what is your current residency status? Unless you are both EU citizens, then you may run in to other problems as well.

The warranty will be valid across Europe for the first two years at least

What do you think will happen when the find out you are in breach of the lease terms.

And they will …. any dealer who works on the car will tell them where it is.

Yes I'm sure VW Malaga are chomping at the bit to call VWFS UK to report one of their cars is in Spain. They must be very busy on the phones during the summer months with all the UK cars driving around.

Don't be preposterous.

Even if they did, all they know is that it's in Spain on X date which maybe completely kosher.

It is still a bad Idea though.

If you are still living in the UK but basing yourself in Spain then trying to insure the lease car there for more than 90 days ( over the year ) will be all but impossible - there was a similar thread on here recently.
Equally trying to insure it in Spain won’t be at all easy especially if you are travelling around constantly.
I’d be dubious of the lease company actually agreeing to this in the first place though.

Sounds like it’s more trouble than it’s worth.

We travel a lot now we are older and although I have a business with leased and rented vehicles I think you are mad absolutely mad!

The whole idea of this is the freedom to go where you want when you want and I find that too many little ties and obstacles like this all add up to one big headache

I dont know you but I'm guessing if you have this you would also have other problems hindering your travels

Yeah I think this is the best route. The rules in Spain make it difficult to keep UK cars there longer than a couple of months.

We have a dog too lol.

I think I'm just going to leave a cheap car in the UK and buy a runaround for Ibiza. If I need to do the odd UK to Ibiza drive with the dog or equipment then I should be able to do that without falling foul of any laws.
