I think it may be because the customer thought about it and felt £400 was too much. (From memory of that video - I saw it a few days ago)
He did however have the option to cancel before GDB left the yard.
Is £400 too much? Well maybe the tyre was close to £200.
GDB had to go from their yard, fetch a tyre then go maybe 35miles up the M6. up to the next junction and back down to the breakdown.
So, given he has a van to run plus his time it sounds okay.

Maybe the guy should have called someone closer ie. someone North of Stoke if he wanted a cheaper price.

Callout, 1hr40m to get there, fit a £200 tyre, on an emergency basis? I'd say £400 was very fair.

Its an expensive tyre sure.

But the guy drove out to the motorway and fitted it on the hard shoulder, not really paying for the tyre is he, he is paying for time and risk.

What alternative did he have? Go back in time and pay for a breakdown service?

Brand new RS3, moaning about 400 quid, drop in the ocean surely?? Seems a reasonable cost to me, to supply, deliver and fit the tyre on the side of the motorway.

Agree with this synopsis.

For some reason, this popped up on my YouTube feed the other day.

Not sure why the tyre fitter left the new tyre with the car? Seems like a bit of a risk if the 'customer' was going to attempt a credit card chargeback later on.

Also, why is the tyre fitter's van liveried up to resemble a fire brigade vehicle? It even had the single word 'Tire' on the bonnet in big yellow letters. But then he did mention several times that he's an emergency service...

The 'Stafford Tyre Service' liveried van is a bit of a humourous marketing gimick. It has been around for ages.
Here are a few

not sure if GDB bought them out or if they were one in the same earlier.

GDB is local to me, and see them about quite a bit. Always decently turned out vehicles.

My dad was talking about this the other day, definitely a case of fur (Canada Goose) coat and no knickers, if you can afford a £1200 coat and a fairly expensive car then you can afford £400, I dont have either and I would be annoyed at paying £400 I would do it and its not the recovery drivers fault.

Why drag him out ? Then try to cancel, the time has passed to bail out once you have rung and paid.

Why be so keen to project an aura of wealth and success when really, you are then looking like you are penniless showoff ?

Still, looks good on insta.

He mentions at one point he was paid by "business bank transfer"

I'm going with this thinking too. Many people buy new cars with a view of them having no other costs associated with them. If you stretch your budget out to whatever your monthlies are, then £400 would seem a lot.

Sound pretty reasonable all things considered.

Good show.

I’ve walked off jobs before due to mouthy customers, the best one was driving a band on a European tour, I’d hired the van and I was driving, ended up dropping the band at Strasbourg at a service station and coming home. My patience only stretches so far.

Presumably because he can contest it as he's got it all on video - he attended, brought the new tyre which he left with the customer, then was asked to leave. You could maybe say he needs to refund a fitting charge (£20?) but otherwise the job was done.

One thing I don't understand is why people will sit in a car on the hard shoulder when they're half a mile from an exit - get off the bloody motorway onto proper roads.

What a fking knobhead.

In that situation I'd have been pissed about having to pay £400 for a tyre, but would gladly hand it over to someone who's come out and sorted it by the side of a busy motorway so I could be safely on the way.

I had a flat on the motorway a couple of weeks back.

Recovery should recover you so presume they didn't have it.

Also I was "only" on the hard shoulder of a slip road but you couldn't pay me to dick about on the hard shoulder of a live motorway like that.

What a pair of utter muppets (the people in the car).
