Losing NCB help
Discussion
Hi, can anyone help, i have not had insurance in my name for almost 2 years which means if I do not purchase and insure a car after 2 years i will loose the NCB.
my question is - can i insure a car and then stop the insurance after a short period (ie a month) and renew the 2 years NCB window?

Are you married/does your wife have a car she uses?
The most commonly suggested option for maintaining NCD on the forum, is for a married couple to alternate the insurance every year on a jointly used car.
Do you or a friend/relative have any garage space, where you can store a vehicle?
That opens up other options.

You can do that to "reset" the 2 years NCD. The question is though, is it worth it? If you're low risk, the discount applied won't make a massive difference.
If you decide to insure a car that you don't actually own, the risk isn't worth it.
The OP is concerned about the expiry of his NCB after 2 years, not that he only has 2 years NCD, I think? If you decide to insure a car that you don't actually own, the risk isn't worth it.
Direct Line allow 3 years if you were last with them, the vast majority only 2 years.I had 6 yrs NCD not being used and insured a car 23 months after it was last used. The new insurer has not requested any proof, although I have it. Presumably they will if there is a claim, giving them an 'out' if i don't have it. I'm sure there is a database holding it all, but I also have 16 yrs being used on a different car.
IF the OP buys insurance and allows the policy to begin, then cancels it, this should 'reset' the clock but there'd be cancellation charges, hefty depending on the broker. A letter stating date of cancellation and how much NCB is available should be provided.
Unless the OP actually has the need to use it, and depending on how many years he has, it wouldn't seem worth it to buy unnecessary insurance. As mentioned, an introductory bonus would likely be given in the future with no claims history.

Yes. When you cancel, just ask for your ncb proof. It'll be dated from the cancellation date and you have 2 more years before it expires. my question is - can i insure a car and then stop the insurance after a short period (ie a month) and renew the 2 years NCB window?
I haven't had a car for over 2 years now. I had 9 years no claims previously.I recently got quotes and declared I had no no-claims. They then asked if I could provide proof of being insured on another policy during that time, which I could. (Named driver on wife's policy).
I was pleasantly surprised by the quotes!
Have you been named on anyone else's policy OP as this looks like it could help you if you lose your own as I have?
