like all petrolheads, I like the brutal sound of a good V8 and it seems that the image and impact of the V8, its virile side appreciated by all, somehow forces us to see it as the engine ultimate affordable.

but for my part, I find the fruity and crispy note, the metallic crescendo of a large in-line 6-cylinder more exciting. ride them in fluid and manic regimes that never end, with knives between their teeth all the way to the red line. others share this opinion ? I know it sounds crazy...

S54 sounds better than any V8 I’ve heard.

See also flat sixes.

Also, kudos for maximum Eric Cantona moment with your second paragraph.

Always thought the M54B30 sounded better imo

The S54 was not a patch on the S65 V8 that followed in the E92 imo too.

I want them all!
I6
Flat 6
V8 cross-plane
V8 flat-plane
V10
each one a joy.
Never quite got the V12 when a good straight six is so smooth. Maybe I haven't tried enough, so add to the list.

I love the sound of a five or a triple, and I love the scream of a highly tuned four pot. V8s are like a cartoon, love the noise but it's all a bit spinal tap. A straight six is THE most cultured sound at big birl...

My M3cs sounded awesome, especially closing in on rev limit. Metallic rasp!

As a serial BMW licker the straight six and V12 are my favourite sounding engines.

But a V8, V10, or straight 5 also make great noises and have their own benefits. smile

you need to google "cantona Stella Artois"
it's a cultural reference point here in uk.

Charms of their own.

A n/a I6 on song is lovely and has the bonus of being peerlessly smooth in normal operation. The V8 (x-plane) throbs at a crawl and "hammers" at chat - drama at both ends!

I'd take either; it's satifying that they're "natural" configurations, no need for split journals or balance shafts, just a suitably balanced crank - God's own configurations (applies elsewhere, but...)!

This is the first post in a series that will go:
"I'm a petrolhead so I like V8s, really I do, but liking V8s is a societal construct so maybe really I prefer I6s"
Then
"Maybe I6s are great, but surely in a modern society I should be able to identify as a ricer if that's how I feel, so I'll get an I4"
Before long you'll be driving a Tesla, competing in our sports and cancelling anyone who asks "why are you driving up to the petrol pumps and standing next to your car when it is clearly an EV?!".

Before I get flamed, this is satire. People who prefer I6s are real petrolheads too. Kinda.

Ignoring power, reliability, technical innovation, etc I think the old Triumph straight 6 and Stag V8 make lovely noises.
