I jokingly said at work (automotive related workplace) that I have to think twice when people mention ICE and that it doesn't mean In-Car-Entertainment. Which to me it does and has done for 30 years. As far as I am concerned ICE only started being used widely recently in the context of NOT EV's.

I was kinda told in no uncertain terms that ICE has always meant Internal Combustion Engine and TBH I was rather taken aback by the veracity of the response.

What's other peoples experience, or maybe there are other acronyms that mean multiple things, but you have to think twice about when you here them.

ICE has been in car entertainment for 30 yrs for sure, you only need to look at an old max power.

ICE has changed since the boom of EV (last 10 years)

Very much entertainment in the 80-90s before built-in entertainment. There were ICE shops on most height streets who migrated to car & mobile phones.

The days when all BMWs came with an empty slot ready to be filled.

Someone who works in an automotive related workplace and doesn't know what ICE meant shouldn't be there..or should be fired of course smile

Same as the OP. It's always meant in car entertainment to me, since the 90's.
Only in the last 2-3 have I known it as internal combustion engine and I still have to think twice when I see it.

Similarly when F1 started calling engines PU's (power units). grumpy

ICE has always been car stereos. It's only since Tesla became popular that its meaning has changed.

I’m also with the OP.
ICE meant in car entertainment until the recent rise of EVs.

IPA, depending on context can be India Pale Ale or Isopropyl Alcohol. One of those is better for drinking than the other!

I just googled and found out that IPA can also refer to the International Phonetic Alphabet.

Back to ICE, I also knew it as 'in car entertainment' well before EV cars became common and it started being commonly used for 'internal combustion engine'.

Agree with OP.

I was into ICE in the 80s, and Home Cinema in the 90s.

In '83, I bought and installed a top-of-the-range Blaupunkt quad-speaker stereo (with 80W amplifier) in an 850 mini!

The ICE cost over £550 at that time - likely near to a couple of grand today.

The mini was worth substantially less! biggrin

I agree with the OP, ICE was always in car entertainment until relatively recently, though I'm not sure how commonly used/known it would have been unless you were into cars?

Whereas I think the now-current ICE vs EV is maybe more commonly understood by people who aren't car enthusiasts?

So perhaps that's why some people would only be aware of the one version.

OP, was this berk you were speaking to a millennial, or a gen Z? They often need reminding that life did exist before they did hehe

I learnt what ICE meant from max-power in something like 1994

There's an information disseminations system in the NHS and it's called ICE. In true a right-on, modern jargon centred spirit it doesn't stand for anything solid or logical but...

NHS said:
What does ICE stand for in hospitals?
Disclosure by patients of their ideas, concerns, and expectations about diagnosis and/or treatment, brought together in the ICE acronym, is a part of 'gathering information' within the communication framework and exemplifies a patient-centred approach.

It always meant In Car Entertainment to me as well. I remember being thrilled when I bought a Sharp radio/cassette in the early 80s with APSS so you could skip a track!

In my work career HVAC always referred to Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning, but now in BMW world it seems it means Hydraulic Valve Actuator Control of something like that. I grew up calling the latter hydraulic tappets. rolleyes

I’ve worked in the auto industry since the late 90s. It has always meant In Car Entertainment to me.

The industry only started using ICE to mean Internal Combustion Engine when EVs appeared - there was no need for it before then because everything was an ICE vehicle.

The industry doesn’t use “EV” anyway, various terms are used (HEV, PHEV, BEV) to distinguish between the various different EV types.

My son had an Audi TT some ten or so years ago, and it had a button on the dash labelled "ESP". You didn't need to ask what it meant, just pressed it and you'll knew instantly!

Indeed. Before the late 60s the word in use was "radio".
The internal combustion engine predated car stereo by about 70 years.

(Yes I know there were a few abortive attempts at car phonographs)
